TAT chief admits it could be THREE YEARS before Thai tourism is back to normal

Maybe Thailand need a quick fix. Tanzania has declared itself covid free and won´t be needing any vaccine thanks to a revolutionary green smoothie consisting of local vegetables.

I´m surprised enterprising thais hasn´t come up with a lucky covid amulet yet. It works for traffic so why not for covid? No vaccine needed and welcome tourists.

He could be wrong and it could be sooner.  Today Thailand only has 237 cases of Covid.  Looks like they have saved the day again, and tourists will be here soon.  Oh happy days, the coffers will be filled, the brown envelopes will flow, and the partying will soar to new heights.

There is a major problem with countries self regulating and reporting on covid testing because of a conflict of interest i.e. if for example a country such as Thailand were to invest in 100% population testing that could reveal a significant covid infection  , that would be detrimental to their valued tourist industry .

Most of the western world reporting is taken in good faith to be reasonably accurate as opposed to many Asian countries reports .

In summary the WHO should be involved in global testing which should lead to unbiased test reports . However it seems that WHO needs some updating in its makeup in order to improve its credence .

It has to happen for the well being of so many Thais......personally, on a very selfish level, I have loved lockdown.

@Natai Beach didn't you mention something about a Thai vaccine consisting of strong Thai herbs and chilis? What phase of testing is the Thai vaccine at?

Well,

Maybe it would be a good time now to "think outside of the box" and NOT "inside" like they still do! (Vaccine Pass, yes/no quarantine and other nonsense...)

Maybe time to put down a REAL strategy how to WELCOME future Tourism (instead of stubbornly continue with their ridiculous and draconian Immigration standards!!)

Maybe time to offer FREE VISA at arrival for 30 days,

Friendly, affordable and simple Retirement Visa by year,

Multi-Entry Visa for residents and much more!

Better English at schools to be more competitive?

Finally understand that Thailand is NOT the only holiday destination in the world!

Finally understand that Thailand IS NOT the center of the world!

Finally understand the use of tolerance while inviting other cultures and stop with their ridiculous, arrogant 'Thainess-Attitude"!

Finally understand that it is NOT the wealthy elite who will resuscitate the 20% of GDP but rather the "mister normal" who will buy at the noodle shop and discover touring this blessed Land Of Beauty!

The wealthy stay at their 5 Star Resort and don't go around to discover or have a few drinks at the little Bar or eat in the small, traditional restaurant.

All very nice, but useless if Thailand is seen as the land of Covid.  The priority must be to vaccinate the population with an effective vaccine and to provide the necessary annual  booster. No one will want to travel to a country where the risk of Covid 19 and its variant is high. They will go to safer options. Maybe, Europeans and North Americans will take the next 2 years to discover safer places like South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand.

Forward-thinking countries invested in vaccines early on. Some countries put money into multiple vaccine candidates.

Thailand did not and are thus at the back of the queue.

They were too busy telling the world they were "covid free" whilst doing almost no testing.

Thailand deserves to wait now while all the properly managed countries who dumped billions into the vaccines get the vaccines first.

and some countries with all the benefits of 'education' and resources ended up with the highest death rates in the world - 'forward thinking'  'properly managed' ? biggest lines of bs I've heard all week ????

tourism is 18% of gdp, but the international one is only 12%.

problem with domestic tourism is now that very few have disposable income.

During songkran they would rather visit families in provinces, maybe stopping for a night at some cheaper hotel, but they won't be staying for extended holidays. Bangkokians would traditionally travel to by car within 3-4h drive

You know more than TAT about tourist GDP...he clearly stated 20% or more and that's international. It's obvious how reliant Thailand is on foreugners

yes, I do read wiki, and he and you don't.
he just said "His comments come as industry leaders have urged the government to save what is left of the ailing tourism sector - 20% of Thai GDP at least - before it is too late and there is nothing for foreign tourists to return to."

And, others have convinced daft, probably poorly educated and skint blue collar retirees that they have beaten the virus.

Let's see who comes out on top in the mid term. Some seem to be freezing to death without coal and stealing rice from SEA countries because they can't feed their borg.

????????????????

The third group are the budget, world travelers who were attracted to Thailand for its lax enforcement of minor drug offenses (e.g., weed).

If you mean young farang, travelling the world - they left Thailand long ago.

For them,  Thailand is a boring destination where they had to travel with mom and dad, as a kid, 20 years ago. It is just another Cancún or Mallorca.

They go to Myanmar and Laos, Beijing, Berlin and NZ.
