The Cambodian naval forces in Preah Sihanouk seized more than 460 kilogrammes of methamphetamine floating in the sea near a beach located in the province. Lieutenant Colonel Nuon Sophal, deputy chief of the Provincial Anti-Drug Trafficking Department, said yesterday that about 11am on Friday, naval forces based in Pouluwai Island were on their normal patroll of the island when they spotted 23 boxes floating on the sea near the beach.

On seeing the boxes, he said, the naval forces team retrieved them from the sea and brought them to shore and upon opening found 461 packets of methamphetamines weighing 464,000 grammes. The initial investigation revealed that these drugs could have been imported from Thailand to Cambodia via Sihanoukville, he added.

“We believe that the suspects (drug traffickers) could have been transporting the drugs by ship or a boat in the seas of the Cambodia-Thai border and probably on seeing the marine forces patrolling the sea, decided to throw them into the sea before fleeing,” he added. Sophal said the police were now investigating the case, including tracking down the suspects, so that legal action can be initiated against them if there is sufficient evidence to link them to the seized drugs.
