June 19, 200422 yr CHIANG RAI : Malaria outbreaks being monitored Authorities in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai are monitoring malaria outbreaks in Burma's Wa areas. Outbreaks were reported near Chiang Rai's Mae Fa Luang district and Chiang Mai's Mae Ai district. Three Wa hospitals, with a total of 90 beds, are filled to capacity, Chiang Rai deputy governor Direk Konkleep said. "I have received reports that many of the 3,000 Wa people are infected with malaria," he said. He expressed concern that without adequate medical services for the Wa the epidemic would spread to Thai border villagers. --The Nation 2004-06-20
