The Kamrieng district police chief was yesterday ordered to be stripped of his rank and fired from the force for releasing two brokers who are allegedly involved in human trafficking of Cambodian workers to work illegally in Thailand, according local media. Fresh News said that Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered the sacking of Colonel Kim Ponlork yesterday and that he be prosecuted according to the law.

Col Ponlork was also issued with a suspension letter earlier yesterday by Battambang provincial police chief Major General Sath Kimsan. Battambang Provincial Police Administration Department  officer Major Mom Saroeun said the decision was made after receiving information and pictures of Ponlork secretly releasing the two brokers who took Cambodian workers to work in Thailand during the COVID-19 outbreak and the authorities prohibiting migration of workers.

On January 31, Maj Saroeun said police in Kamrieng district arrested two men, who took four men across a Cambodia-Thai border checkpoint to work illegally in Thailand. During the police operation, he said, they managed to rescue the victims while arresting the two men, detaining them at the district police station.
