Prime Minister orders emergency measures to contain 3rd community outbreak of COVID-19, 32 new cases

Featured Replies

Just when Cambodia had managed to contain the drastic increase in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in the country, especially amongst the thousands of returning migrant workers from Thailand, the capital was rocked by rumours last night that a new community outbreak has been detected. The rumours were confirmed by Prime Minister Hun Sen who announced that 32 new COVID-19 positive cases had been detected within 10 hours last night, mostly Chinese, including a Vietnamese and another national.

This news was announced this morning by Prime Minister Hun Sen in a special broadcast, after calling for an emergency meeting with ministers. He dubbed this new wave as the “February 20 Community incident”. According to the premier, yesterday a Chinese woman in Phnom Penh who planned to go abroad took a COVID-19 test, and her test result came back positive. Thus, the people who have been in contact with her, almost all of whom are Chinese, were traced and brought testing.

Many of results came back positive and thus far, up to 10am this morning,  32 people related to this cluster have been  tested positive. “This is a new alarming point, which we have never seen before since the beginning of the outbreak in Cambodia,” he said. “The bad news came in the midst of we  showing good result in combatting the imported cases from Thailand and Vietnam.”
