Hi all

I just found out that Gulf Air are going to stop all flights between Bangkok and Hong Kong from the 31st May

all valid tickets after that date will be transfered to other code share airlines. This is a bit of a bummer really

as Gulf Air arrived in Hong Kong at a reasonable time and had fairly good prices compared to other airlines.

You are right. Etihad Airways will take over. GF also cancels the 4x times a week Bangkok- Muscat flight as from June 1st. GF is in financial trouble again and is cutting all unprofitable routes and will be cutting about 25% of its workforce.

one reason why I did not fly GULF since 2004 is, that u will earn only 25% of the actual miles on ur FF-account on cheaper booking classes.

Emirates, Qatar, Etihad: they all give u 100% in any classes and if u fly to Europe at least 2 times a year, u will usually be able to get a free ticket within 3-5 years.....

stupid, narrowminded management at GULF: now u pay the bill.... :o

That's too bad. I've flown Gulf many times to HK, as they are always the cheapest fare and eticket online using Zuji.com Does anybody know the cheapest regular flights to HK now?

Gulf Air suffers from 2 handicaps in comparison with the other airlines of the Persian Gulf statelets.

1. Its owners, Bahrain and Oman, are the poorest but also the most populous of those states. The airline therefore can afford less. On top of that it is overstaffed.

2. It takes on locals (who are unsackable) very often without regard to, or far above the competence of, their relevant qualifications. Its top managerial staff is the least competent and professional advisors or foreign staff must always have an eye on political considerations.

It will inevitably fall more and more behind Qatar, Etihad, Emirates. (Saudi and Kuwaiti of course are non-starters commercially - and exist purely on state subsidy.)

Oman has now pulled out of Gulf Air, leaving Bahrain as its sole owner. Only time will tell whether this is a good or bad development for the airline. Personally, I think the latter. Gulf Air has had its time, and has been overtaken by the other Gulf carriers. Surprisingly though the Gulf Air CEO has moved to Etihad, while it can't really be said that he excelled in his job at Gulf Air, can it?
