Tong-urai shrub called in English

Featured Replies

Noticed in recent years the increased use of a shrub with beautiful yellow flowers along roadsides. Currently in my area there are quite a few roads looking quite spectacular because of the yellow flowers. The wife tells me it's called in thai 'Tong-urai' but what is it called in English?

Apologies, this is the tree not the shrub you are looking for.

The shrub is indeed called “ Tong-urai” ( or Tong-ulai, as the gf calls it ).

Sorry, I don’t know the English name, not being much help am I ?? ????

It is indeed Tecoma stans, Latin names really do help when discussing plant names in Thailand.

Obviously, this flower being yellow and thus being a royal colour (both the late king and the present one being born on a Monday), but I wonder why I am seeing it all over the place recently, in Buriram anyway.

My wife says she knew it long ago, so why now?  I can't say I particularly like the rather vulgar shade of yellow that it produces, but that's just me.

Thanks everyone.

Here's a pic taken in Khao Yai area a few months back by the wife.

It's definitely increasing in popularity around Thailand over the years.
