WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and 13 other countries expressed concerns on Tuesday that the World Health Organization (WHO) report on the origins of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 was delayed and lacked access to complete data, according to a joint statement.

It followed WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus's assertion that data was withheld from its investigators who traveled to China to research the origins of the pandemic.

"It is equally essential that we voice our shared concerns that the international expert study on the source of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was significantly delayed and lacked access to complete, original data and samples," said the joint statement released on the website of the U.S. State Department (https://bit.ly/2QSQfrC).

The statement was signed by the governments of Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The White House on Tuesday urged the World Health Organization to take additional steps to determine the origins of COVID-19 after a report on the issue failed to meet expectations of the United States and its allies.

China refused to provide raw data on early COVID-19 cases to the WHO-led team, one of the team's investigators has already said, potentially complicating efforts to understand how the global pandemic began.

The countries' joint statement supported further studies of animals to find how the virus was introduced to humans, and called for a renewed commitment from WHO and member countries to access, transparency and timeliness.

"It is critical for independent experts to have full access to all pertinent human, animal, and environmental data, research, and personnel involved in the early stages of the outbreak relevant to determining how this pandemic emerged," the statement said.

Establishing such guidelines for investigations will help countries detect, prepare and respond to future outbreaks, it said.

Time for the world to wake up and see China for the threat it is.

Sadly it is not only China ... In nearly every underdeveloped country with an uneducated population , people just go out to the natural habitats of wildlife  and exploit it .

That the virus originated in China this time is just a coincidence . It could well have been some African countries ( Ebola ) ,, Brazil , or ...Thailand .

The virus is this planet's reaction to a disease called ' mankind ' .

Why is China the threat when the only people starting wars are the US/UK/Israel axis of evil?

It is not about wars . It is about the continuous destruction of the environment , that affects all of us .

That there are still wars , nations fighting against other nations , and that in the 21st century , at a time where scientists invented all the necessary technology to live a sustainable life without destroying too much , is just a proof that mankind is still a primitive species unable to foresee the consequences of their own acts .

Some see it , but most do not know or care , because they are hungry ( for food , money or power ) , and don't give a damn about other things . Sad and stupid .

The Virus is just a small problem to mankind compared to what will happen in the not too distant future .

Mankind is the dominant species on this planet and , with this , inherited the responsability to act in a sustainable way .

But it does not do it . It is too occupied to make wars against each other and the planet , at a time where consolidated action is urgently required .

China is smart. Who needs a war when you can unleash a worldwide pandemic killing millions then sell home grown vaccines at profit to the gullible

You touch a very sensible point there ...

I am sure that in a few secret laboratories buried deep underground in some deserted parts of some developed countries , scientists are busy creating artificial  lethal viruses and their antidotes now  that governments have experienced the effects of a pandemic .

The ' chosen few '  will get the antidote ( vaccine ) , and then the virus will be released to get rid of all those  'disturbing and unwanted people' in the eyes of an evil regime .

A truly horrible vision that I hope will never come true  ... but , you know ... what can be done ,  will be done ... ?

That is debatable. When it happens again it may not be a coincidence. China has benefitted from the virus like no other country on the planet.

I'm not worried about small poor countries interfering with international shipping, polluting the air, damming the rivers in SE Asia, invading Taiwan, colonizing Africa, spying and hacking governments and industry, stealing confidential information, producing tainted food and pharmaceuticals, repressing and exploiting minorities, hacking infrastructure in sovereign countries, and a hundred other offenses against the global community that China is guilty of.

That’s true, but China’s huge population together with the vastly greater number of tourists from China makes it far more likely that the world will be infected by future novel zoonotic viruses originating in China than from other countries. Just a matter of probability. SARS-1....China. SARS-2....China. Yep, just another coincidence.

It's even smarter than that. Why venture into such a complex and risky tactic like the one you claim, when you are already on the way to dominate the world under normal and peaceful conditions.

Do you really think I believe that? Perhaps you missed the sarcasm
