Unveiled as a grand facelift for Thailand’s best-known river, the Chao Phraya Promenade project has made zero progress since its opponents secured an injunction from the Central Administrative Court early last year.

Another nail was hammered in the project’s coffin last month, when the Supreme Administrative Court dismissed the appeal against the injunction. The ruling left the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) with an even smaller chance of realising its vision to rival the grand riverside promenades of Shanghai, Paris or London.

However, that chance has not completely evaporated yet, with the project only suspended pending the court’s review.

Why would they not want something like this , it would be a huge tourist attraction especially after coronavirus levels are brought right down .

The problem is nothing to do with environment but everything to do with the people that have either squatted on the land or the hotels and condos that would lose their exclusivity.

If you look at the area involved there is a lot of money involved.

A lot of people would have to move and the government would have to figure that out as most of them are below poverty lines and have been there for generations.

Too much influence, vested interest and old-fashioned money involved. This will be blocked for decades yet.

Can't help but think the reality would be far less appealing than the picture

They talk and dream now already for more than 20 years...kept dreaming...then dreaming is all there is!
