tropo
Does anyone have any knowledge of a lab where one can order blood tests for personal health monitoring? I'm sick of paying ridiculous prices for everything at PIH and I know Bangkok Hostpital/Pattaya is even worse. Specifically I'm interested in monitoring cholestrol levels and liver function. i.e. Bilirubin, ALP, AST, ALT etc. In the Philippines I just used to rock up at a public hospital and have as many tests as I wanted done whenever I wanted, and cheaply too. I was wondering if the same possibilities exist here in Pattaya.
Phil Conners
Try one of the government hospitals in Si Racha or Sattahip. Search this forum for more details. You could also ask in one of the many clinics around Pattaya.

I wouldn't go that far to do simple tests, but my next step will be to shop around some clinics around the place and see what I can come up with. A while back on the forum somebody mentioned a pathology lab in Naklua where one can get tests done. I remember poster said that all the clinic doctors use it. Maybe if you search the forum you will find. I will make a search when I have time.

ProThaiExpat
There is an implied presumption that private hospitals require physician orders for blood tests. In Chiang Mai, Rama provides blood tests by just walking in a getting them from the lab. Patient number is asked for but not sure if required, as a copy of the results goes into your patient file. Five years ago, I walked into a clinic on the road that runs away from the ocean in South Pattaya, the one you have to take when you encounter the walking street as you drive south along the beach, left side of street, near German restaurant. I am sure it is still there. Old lady doctor runs the clinic and charged just for the blood test. No exam involved or contract with physician. Tammi
I would suggest Pattaya Clinical Labs on Pattaya-Naklua Road. Many of the clinics in Pattaya send blood tests here. If you cut out the middle man you get quicker results and pay about half the price There you go!

I rode all the way from Dolphin Roundabout to Naklua and back, but couldn't find a clinic of that name. Would you perhaps know the exact location? I did find a clinic on Soi BuaKhao (named Buakhouw Clinic) which does just about every blood test you could imagine for 240 baht per test. They have their own lab upstairs. Thanks to everyone for all your imput.

borracho
Bumrumgrad offers a neat comprehensive package checkup of your health. Aside from that should find plenty smaller facilities that offers cheaper packages. You will still need to consult with a doc to order up the appropriate tests. Unless you are a doc yourself or can pretend to be. Most of the doctors out there are just pretending!

I was wondering if the same possibilities exist here in Pattaya. I walked into BKK Hosp Patt and asked for some cholesterol checks. I told them i did not want to see a doctor. I had 4 tests results costing 1350 baht total. LDL direct cholesterol Triglyceride HDL cholesterol There was an additional 200 baht which i presume was for the weighing/ blood pressure check etc and another 18.5 baht ( assumed for the syringe )
Beardog
I Use Pattaya International hospital & Tell them I need an ast &alt blood test for liver enzyme function test. If you saved your previous results & know how to read them somewhat It is about 300 baht. Tell them you just want the blood test & do not require the doctor to read the results it is 60-80 baht for the nurse evaluation (check weight & blood pressure- mandantory) & the rest goes to the test. Results are done in 20- 30 minutes & It is another 10 baht for a copy of the results! I also got tired of getting the long deal & figured since I have been testing alt & ast for liver functions for the last 12 years, it isn't necessary to see the doctor unless your stats really spike ! Then I would suggest confiring with the doctor. This saves about 700-900 baht a visit! If you need other tests I am sure they would charge accordingly with the same test batch of blood. I stopped using Pattaya bkk hospital as I do not care to re-donate to their newer wing at the hospital & I found they don't listen all that well either. Pattaya international speaks english well also. With all the hospitals I have found you must be firm with your requests as they will gladly overspend a farangs baht. Good luck Barry Shulman
tropo
Thanks guys for the info. I had 4 tests done today at the Buakhouw Clinic on Soi Buakhao. 1. AST 2. ALT 3. ALP 4. Direct/Total Bilirubin. Total costs 960 (240 x 4). I had my results in just over one hour. The Bilirubin takes a little longer.

Also if you dont mind me mentioning and I hope this does not come across in a condescending manner, that is far from my intention but liver function test results analysis / interpretation is a specialist area and certainly in the case of bilirubin, test results can vary considerably between testing labs. I would add that I have no medical training what so ever ...just had a lot of liver tests. Hope your results are ok.

And you are right about different labs/different results. Chulalongkorn gives much nicer results than Bumrungrad for many tests. This difference is, I suppose, why hospitals will always want to do their own tests and not accept those from another hospital or clinic - the doctors have got accustomed to figuring out how ill/well the patient is from looking at their own hospital's tests. Then you get the doctors who look at another hospital's tests and, with hindsight, say they would have investigated further because of such and such a result. (the doctor at testing hospital has given a clean bill of health when the patient actually has a life threatening disease.)

tropo
You are right, there are 5 tests here. In this particular lab, and other labs where I've been tested in the past (other countries), Total/Direct bilirubin is considered as one test. In the context of my own partiucular condition I know exactly how to interpret the results. In my case I had to distinguish whether or not a persisant pruritus was a result of elevated unconjugated bilirubin caused by cholestasis, or a result of an allergy. This clinic is about half way between Soi Diana Inn and Soi Honey Inn on the opposite side (3rd road side of Soi Buakhao). If you turn left onto Soi Buakhao from Soi Diana Inn, it's down a little on your right.
Phil Conners
The "Official Thailand Survival Guide, Pattaya Edition" says Pattaya Clinical Laboratory, 62/2 M.5 Pattaya-Naklua Road. Opposite Numchai Group. Tel 038 367 236 and 038 226 061. [email protected] The phone numbers are incorrect and they don't seem to read their mail. They are not opposite Numchai Group but on the east side of Naklua road about 200m south of Numchai. The tech is Khun Kuson Saengnak. The correct phone numbers are 038 367 326 or 038 367 864, mobile 08 1863 2868, fax 038 410379. Prices were clearly indicated in English for a variety of tests. Most tests in the area 500-800 baht and some up to 1500-2000 baht.
