Thailand's social media was abuzz with suggestions that two men fined in Ayutthaya yesterday for not wearing masks were driving or on motorcycles at the time.

Bang Pa-in district chief Saisunee Manin said there was no truth in that.

People would not be stopped for riding motorcycles alone without masks, driving alone or just out walking alone.

The two men at the center of the controversy were mask-less at a fresh food market in Bang Nang Ra sub-district on Sunday at 1.30 pm when they were stopped by a phu yai ban and their assistant.

The men were handed over to the Bang Pa-in police and fined 500 baht each, reported Channel 3 news.

The Ayutthaya governor earlier issued orders for all people to wear masks in public places or face fines.

Similar orders are in place in many provinces nationwide, notes Thaivisa.
