So exchange for $$$, keep below 10k, and good to go.

USD20K is OK, from IATA..."Foreign currencies: unlimited. However, amounts of foreign currency exceeding USD 20,000.- (or equivalent) must be declared to a Customs Officer upon departure by all travelers."

I don't know what you mean by exchange for $$$ below 10K

 

From your initial question i presume you flight out of Thailand

and you want to know if you can legally take Thai baths with you

the answer is yes, not in excess of 50 000 thb

(It's the limit without custom declaration)

 

now you have to look at the requirments of your country of destination, the cash you are allowed to bring with you without any custom declaration could be under this 50000 thb limit

Note that the limit is for all the totality of the cash you are carrying with you during your travel, not only the Thb. 

 

The only reason why you would want to take thai money in cash with you is if you are back soon and you don't want to bother with the xchange 2 times, when you go out then when you go back in the country.

 

You can not use the thai money outside of Thailand and it's not easy to change Thai money outside of Thailand (Plus the xchange rate should be bad anyway if you find somewhere to do the change)

The OP don't indicate what is his destination

if he goes to europe, the limit is 10 000 euros

It depends where you are travelling to.

 

If you are travelling to Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam or Yunnan province in the People's Republic of China you can take out up to THB 2,000,000.

 

If you are travelling anywhere else you are allowed to take out up to THB 50,000.

 

You need to declare your cash to a customs officer if you are taking out an aggregate amount exceeding 450,000 Baht or USD 15,000 or its equivalent.

 

You can find out how to do that here.

 

Your transit and destination countries may have their own declaration limits and procedures.

In terms of exchange rate, you are almost always going to get a much better rate exchanging your Baht for your destination currency in Thailand if that is possible.

AFAIK you can't cross from Thailand to China without stepping either in Burma or Laos. Closest distance from Thailand (Chiang Rai) to China (Xishuangbanna, Yunnan) is a good 250-300km by road....

Normally by air to Changshui (KMG)or Xishuangbanna (JHG).

It was very clear. Problem with comprehension? He intends to circumvent the 50K THB limit by instead converting his THB to USD which would have a different reportable upper limit. To bypass the reporting requirement, he plans to bring less than 10k USD.

 

I don't believe you're claim above of a reportable amount below 50K THB. This is fear mongering. Almost all countries adhere to the universal 10k USD reportable amount as a minimum.

What are you going to do with it? I took baht to oz and banks won't exchange and the maggot money exchange booths will exchange it with a 50% discount. So I'm going back with the same baht.
