German-born American architect Helmut Jahn, known for his postmodern steel-and-glass structures, has died aged 81 in Illinois after being hit by two vehicles while he was riding his bicycle, police said.

 

Jahn died on Saturday afternoon in Campton Hills, about 100km (60 miles) west of Chicago, when he “failed to stop at a posted stop sign” at an intersection, according to police on Sunday,

 

The two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions, police said, adding that Jahn died at the scene and one driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The 5 pin trusses were originally designed to be made with all the steel tubes pre-curved to give a nice smooth rounded appearance when welded together.  Unfortunately the cost was considered as too high, different curves for different positions being required, so straight sections were used.

Still ended up looking quite good though.

81 years old is not too bad. Unfortunately he made a wrong decision to not stop. Seems the world lost a great artist. 

You never know...live each day to the fullest and spend quality time with those you love.

It’s a shame.  Seems to happen frequently as cyclists often play the game of acting like a car, then acting like a pedestrian with often ignoring the basic rules of stopping, yielding, etc.   Can’t help but think if the cyclists in the States were educated and held to the road rules, there would be less of these deaths.  Much like scooter drivers here it seems. 

It depends on the area but riding a bicycle in the US is almost a revolutionary act. Where I stay now people come off a freeway enter a 4 lane one way road,  drive 70+mph in a 35 mph zone for most of a mile until they slow down. There are few cues otherwise.

 

They do do respect "zebra crossings" but still many pedestrians and cyclists get run down
