A Serbian volleyball player has apologised to the Thai team for making an alleged racist gesture during a game in the Nations League, hosted by Italy yesterday (Tuesday).

 

The player, Sanja Djurdjevic, pulled the corners of her eyes back, to narrow them into an ‘oriental’ shape, a gesture not appreciated by native Asians. Sanja has posted on Instagram, saying she is aware of her mistake and that she apologised after the game to the Thai team, who lost to the Serbians 3-0.

 

“I only wanted to address my teammates with the message ‘now we will start playing defence like them.’ I didn’t mean to disrespect anyone. Of course it was unfortunate and not so smart gesture from my side,” she wrote.

The Thais must have been truly outraged by this. As we all know, they never make jokes at the expense of other races.????

 

I bet Anutin wasnt pleased by all this. Dirty farangs mocking the master race. The horror.

 

The Serb should become a member of the Thai government with excuses like that though... shockingly bad.

 

 

As a Caucasian, I am deeply offended by the racism that I am subjected to almost every day here in Thailand. But I'll get over it.

Or maybe he just doesn’t want to draw comparisons between vaccination rates in Europe compared to Thailand? Especially after a 3-0 drubbing in the volleyball ????.

It is BS she is a racist, though one can hardly imagine a girl over age 9 making such a childish taunt. A continuing issue in the sports world to be taken seriously. She should be disqualified from Olympic competition at a minimum.

Really not as bad as you might imagine from the reporting. The gesture was made to a teammate, just a fleeting joke and not a provocation to the other team. They have a robust sense of humor in the Balkans that has not yet been beaten down by cancel culture.

These people are still living in the 1940s, plenty of examples of such in football (soccer), within the players and spectators.

They simply have a different culture from yours.

In many ways, the current focus in the US on color is a backward step. An American from the 90s would be surprised at how unapologetically racist the supposedly "anti-racist" movement is in 2021.
 

They would also wonder where all the good-natured humor had gone. Part of what previously marked the true acceptance of diversity was the ability of people of different ethnicities to poke fun at each other.

By the way, in the 1940s "these people" waged a courageous resistance against real, actual racists.

Look at how fleeting this gesture was. The game had ended, the Serbs had won, they were in high spirits, she made the gesture as part of a jokey conversation with a teammate, unaware that it would be caught on camera.

The joke was that they could mount as good a defense as the Thai team by simply slanting their eyes. It is a bit surreal, but funny in a deliciously inappropriate way. She was angling to get a shocked laugh from her teammate, and she succeeded in that.

I'm a bit surprised how many forum members condone the gesture. I'm pretty sure if a Thai had done something equally low-key racist to a farang on the BTS, there would be outrage.

 

Members of sports teams that take part in international tournaments should really know better!

This is circulating around Thai social media as they are really ticked off at them. Son just showed me this picture. Japan in 2017, so nothing new for the racists. 

How the hell does pulling your eyes into a slant mean now we will play defense like them??? 

Her excuse was nonsense.  Shall we also tolerate the typical hooliganistic  slurs when they face Brazil

or the Dominicans in Tokyo?
