Coronavirus curbs shutter thousands of Bangkok restaurants

Need top stop all this lunacy very, very soon.

70-80 million people got added to the world population last year during this pandemic.

If the same happens this year , then we are looking like adding 150,000,000 people to the world in 2 years - even allowing for covid deaths.

The amount of people losing jobs, businesses, dying from lost hospital appointments, losing housing, lifestyles just disappearing makes no sense any more.

The world and world leaders are destroying the planet more than the disease.

What do you think this Vaccine is for? This is there solution

It’s a shame.  I enjoyed breakfast at Chu’s, especially the smoked salmon eggs Benedict.

Last week Victoria announced a grant of $3,500 for restaurants for the week lockdown. When it was extended for another week they gave another $3,500.

Thailand gave nothing and then gave more nothing and when that ran out, gave an additional nothing,

As a tax paying person, i also got nothing, in addition to nothing, no tax breaks, no tax refunds, big fat nothing,

I’ve been saying it since the beginning — the damage done by these ineffective lockdowns causes more damage than a virus that has a greater than 99% survival rate.

“Deaths of despair” is the phenomenon associated with these over zealous government reactions, across the world. Increases in suicide, drug and alcohol abuse and overdoses, murders are directly caused by the lockdowns.  The long term effects on mental health are just now coming to light as we see an increase in practically all crime across the world, in part due to economic devastation and in part dwindling mental health and well-being.

These figures will never be tallied though since they’re acceptable losses to the elites in power who aren’t and never will be affected by poverty and losing your only means to make a living, or crippling despair, and mind numbing boredom.

The virus isn’t going away and you can’t hide from it sitting in a room all day. We should learn to live with it the sane way — the most vulnerable population self-isolates, limits exposure to others until they can get a vaccine, and takes extra precautions. Sensible hygienic practices and common sense for the rest of the population who aren’t as vulnerable and would probably make a full recovery if they caught it. Putting everyone’s lives on hold multiple times with no end in sight and with no aid from the government is not the right way to do it. If you insist on having lockdowns, generous aid from the government has to also come with it.

It wasn't the coronavirus that closed the restaurants, it was the restrictions issued by the authorities. Let's try to keep it in mind

So true it's laughable.you and your partner stay home together,no mask, you and your partner drive the car and are supposed to mask up,you park the car, walk down the street wearing masks.you walk into a restuarant, sit down and take your mask off....where's the logic.

This is certainly the first time in history (first wave excluded) that most of the worlds economies were deliberately shut down. Even during all 51 of the major bubonic plagues, between 541AD In Europe and Western Asia, and the last one to happen in China in 1946, the Japanese smallpox plague of AD735, the Mexican smallpox plague of 1519, the massive influenza plague of 1616, which took an estimated 50% of more, of the local populations in Europe, and North America, the Russian cholera epidemic of 1846, the worldwide flu pandemic of 1889, and of course the infamous Spanish flu of 1918, which took out an estimated 20-100 million people, ports were locked down, and some isolation was done, but economies were never totally shut down. Makes one wonder what it truly going on.

One of the issues I have personally, with regard to Covid related info, is that nearly all of it is driven by some sort of agenda, politics, fear, paranoia, and bad information. It is very hard to get accurate info without some sort of slanted objective.

I can understand crowded bars, and clubs, where you have to shout to be heard, and in the process you release alot of spittle. But a restaurant? Why? It only appears to be an additional hardship for hundreds of thousands who are only trying to make a living, and patrons who are only trying to let off a little steam and enjoy some much needed recreation. If anything, allowing drinking in restaurants brings down the national crime rates!

So, where is the science? If anything the shutdown of restaurants likely causes more harm, than good. Both psychologically for the population, and financially for the community and the families involved in running the restaurant.

Witnesses called by the Restaurant Association of Maryland argued that the city’s dining ban and lockdown measures like it were causing irreparable economic and psychological harm. They added that the restaurant shutdown, which went into effect in December, had not reduced the number of COVID-19 cases in Baltimore.

Despite orders to suspend outdoor dining in Los Angeles County amid an increase in coronavirus cases, Eyewitness News has found restaurants have been linked to less than 4% of coronavirus outbreaks in non-residential settings, according to data from L.A. County. "I feel like the restaurant industry was basically used as a pawn," Barger said, "as there is no logic and that is my frustration, you know what I hear is the inconsistencies that continue to take place not only in the county but in the state as well, have put people in a situation where there's a lack of trust in the people making these decisions because they seem very arbitrary and very random."

We can go in circles providing logical and rational explanations and reasons for this or that, sadly all governments for whatever reason have decided on one way and anyone speaking out gets shut down with heavy force if needed under pretense of doing it for the good of society.

Fear mongering, worked well, vast majority became sheeple, those able to think or speak simply made to be silent.

In the mean time, middle class is disappearing if already has not, poverty grew tenfold and more to come once banks start to take away peoples homes.

Many including myself worked hard all life only to end up with nothing and start again only this time not from zero but from minus.

Struggling to stay positive and optimistic when rug can get pulled from under you at any time

Because they were daily wage earners cash in hand and not on any government books.

It was the corona virus that brought about the restrictions let's keep that in mind.

These closures are a nuisance.  For us.

For the staff, their wages are gone.

For the owners, this ends their income, their hopes and dreams, their legacy for the next generations of their family.

Let's not moan to much about the inconvenience to us, we'll get past it and be in much the same position as before, many won't.

Alot of truth. And a very sad truth. This is reducing the size of the middle class worldwide, and decimating hard working, honest, law abiding lower income folks. And who benefits? Big corporations, the big Pharma mafia, and government. Not us.

Could not have put it better !

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH , stop this utter lunicy and get on with life .

Isolate the weak if they require , it's a VIRUS , every lockdown adds to its potency , and destroy life's .

Lockdown is a socialist ideal , that works for the wealthy ,time to start looking after everyone else .

Ludicrous actions ,all over the world to appease the paranoid .

It's good to see that in such desperate times the Thai baht can still make gains against the dollar and GBP.

Finally! attention to a situation that is no longer tenable for restaurants across Thailand, that has killed the life of its cities, Chiang Mai being one of the hardest hit.  How does the Junta expect tourists to come to a country where you will be arrested for drinking alcohol in public, where you are forbidden a glass of wine with your dinner, where everything you love about being on vacation can be taken away with a simple decree from the Covid Czar.  This is ludicrous - Thailand as a tourist destination is rapidly disappearing because there will be no infrastructure for tourism left.

As soon as the tourist can come back watch the restaruants spring up on every conor and the tourist companies open up. Many here are just to negative. The people who went under more than likely under funded.

Really? So explain to me, why didn't Russia, Belarus, Sweden have a lockdown day? And despite this they have had fewer cases than those who have made the lockdown. What is this'? Does the virus hate Russians and Swedes? Or is it because these countries have not obeyed certain world hierarchies that have imposed the lockdown? Please explain it

And the lockdowns worked amazing in the UK — 127k deaths with some of the harshest restrictions and lockdowns. Up until recently was in the top 5 highest covid cases and deaths in the world. Even with full-measure lockdowns.

I know many from taxi driver to hair salon who can survive no longer.

Just imagine if the Thai government HAD started the vaccine rollout in earnest back in February and had vaccinated most of the country as they had promised, they could have been on the UK's Amber or even Green list and would have been swamped by brits and Europeans that have had both jabs  that not only regularly visit Thailand but loads of new tourists with fewer places to go just itching to go on holiday somewhere.... how short sighted!!

The world and world leaders are destroying the planet more tha
n the disease.

All the whole world is doing is allowing this Chinese virus to control us instead of fighting back. If the world had not shut down at the beginning of this pandemic, we would almost be back to normal today. This is what I really believe.

Sure there would be collateral damage, but not enough to ruin peoples lives and livelihoods the way it has done.

"The world and world leaders are destroying the planet more than the disease" This statement is just so true.

Sad to read Chu has shut its doors. I fear many of our favorite eateries will be no more when we get back in August.

Any news about Indigo on Convent Road?

As usual, Reuters misses an important point...

The ban on alcohol.

Everyone should know... that alcohol is a big chunk of the margin of every restaurant.

So since april 24... the restaurants... ALL OVER Thailand, whatever their childish "color" system... can not sell alcohol.

Since mid may in Bangkok ("dark red")... they can open at 25 % inside... but still without alcohol.

And what was achieved by such brillant policy ?

Nothing. We still have nationwide, our 3000 cases and 30 deads every day... And so called clusters popping out.

The parks are still closed. The school are still closed (and they won't open on june 14 in BKK that's for sure), etc.

"The parks are still closed. The school are still closed (and they won't open on june 14 in BKK that's for sure), etc."  But look at places who are not and will not close, immigration offices, it's almost as if there is no pandemic at all as far as they are concerned.

Single biggest mass overreaction in the history of mankind.

I feel bad for everyone who lost their job/business because of our collective cowardice and inability to understand problems at scale. Hope they will be able to land on their feet.

What test are they using when deciphering all these new daily cases? If it is the PCR test, how can we take them seriously. We all know the PCR test by now.
