Kandal Provincial Court on Wednesday charged five Chinese men and jailed them for drug possession and attempting to smuggle more than 130 kilogrammes of drugs worth more than $2 million to Vietnam. Court spokesman Chuon Sophanha identified the five Chinese men as Liang Li Hua, 60; Qiu Qing Wei, 60; Chen Zhi Qiang, 60; Chen Shen Tang, 57; and Li Yi, 24.

Provincial anti-drug police officer Lieutenant Colonel Keo Sothy told Khmer Times yesterday that they were the target of a crackdown on foreign drug ringleaders who have been transporting drugs and precursors across the Cambodian-Laos border to produce in Phnom Penh and Kandal and later distribute manufactured drugs to users in Cambodia as well as export them to Vietnam.

He said that they were arrested on May 28, 29 and 30 after anti-drug police from both Kandal and Phnom Penh raided their rental houses in Kandal province’s Mok Kampoul district. He said that police knew their identities and whereabouts after an undercover police officer posing as a drug dealer contacted them in order to buy drugs on the evening of May 30.
