BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister has helped promote Lava Durian from Sisaket province as part of the online marketing campaign to boost orders.

The Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has participated in the promotion of Lava Durian produced in Sisaket province, which is one of Thailand’s agricultural products with geographical indicators (G.I.) being promoted.

Durian farmers in Sisaket are now selling their produce directly on www.lavadurian.com website, where customers can place their orders for the durian directly with farmers, and have it delivered fresh from the farm.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister has met with the Minister of Finance Arkhom Termpittayapaisith and Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul at the promotional event for this campaign, where he said the lava durian from Sisaket is his favorite fruit.

He said the online retailing platform being developed will help farmers reach out to customers more easily, helping them sell more during the COVID-19 crisis, in which farmers, like many other occupations, are affected.

The Prime Minister has congratulated Sisaket durian farmers on an increasing amount of sales to domestic and international customers, saying the government will continue doing its best to promote the popularity of Thai fruit in international markets.

The Minister of Finance, Arkhom Termpittayapaisith revealed there are 1,368 hectares (8,552 rai) of durian farms in Sisaket province alone, with the total yield this year expected to reach 4,195 tons.

Currently, lava durians from Sisaket are being sold at 160-180 baht per kilogram at the farm, and retailed at 180-200 baht in the city. It is expected this produce will help generate 713 million baht revenue this year.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul said this particular durian variety has been developed by Sisaket Horticultural Research Center, with bigger, glossier pulp and firmer texture than the more common Mon Thong variety. The fruit can also be stored longer without getting mushy, and has a unique taste, different from the lava durian farmed in other areas. It is also known formally as the “238th Anniversary of Sisaket” variety of durian.

Maybe something a little more catchy might help sales.

Instead of I want some "238th Anniversary of Sisaket" Durian, I want that "extra stanky Sisaket" variety.

A year ago we visited one of the durian farms near Kantharalak and bought several lava durian and brought them back in the car. The wife also shipped several boxes of them back home to Bangkok for sale and distribution among her friends.

Those who like durian in general will likely find the lava durians from Sisaket to be quite good. For those who can't stand durian, these won't be any different.

We'll be making another trip to Sisaket later this month. Lava durian is high on the must-get list.
