Thai police have detained a 48-year-old American man in Phuket after the FBI asked authorities to trace him over eight arrest warrants issued in Alabama, including one federal warrant.

The man, identified as Lance Beck, is accused in the United States of offences involving the sexual abuse of a child under 14. Thai immigration authorities have revoked his permission to remain in the kingdom and transferred him to an Immigration Detention Centre pending his return to the US.

FBI request led police to Phuket hotel

The Royal Thai Police said it was contacted by the FBI on 27 August 2026 to help locate Mr Beck, who had allegedly fled to Thailand.

The eight warrants comprise seven issued at state level in Alabama and one federal warrant. The allegations include sexual torture, rape, human trafficking, facilitating a child's travel for an unlawful sex act, sexual abuse and incest.

According to police, the allegations relate to the abuse of a child aged under 14, with video recordings said to have been made. These remain allegations for the US legal process.

The investigation was overseen by Pol Maj Gen Chotiwat Luangwilai, commander of the Metropolitan Police Investigation Division; Pol Maj Gen Songprod Sirisukha, commander of Immigration Division 3; and Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum, commander of Phuket Provincial Police.

Investigators from the Metropolitan Police IDMB, Immigration Division 3 and Sakhu Police Station established that Mr Beck had entered Thailand through Phuket International Airport. They located him at a hotel in Nai Yang, Sakhu, Thalang district, Phuket.

Permission to stay cancelled

Police attended the hotel at about 2.15pm on 29 August 2026. They said Mr Beck acknowledged that he was the person sought after officers informed him of the order cancelling his permission to stay in Thailand.

He was then taken to the Immigration Detention Centre, where he will be held while arrangements are made to send him back to the United States to face proceedings.

Thai authorities regularly cooperate with foreign law-enforcement agencies on cross-border cases, particularly where a suspect is believed to have entered or stayed in Thailand. The action in this case followed direct coordination with the FBI, police said.

The combination of those charges reads as if he was sexually abusing his young daughter. And he taped it.

As an American, the laws in the US apply to all US passport holders, worldwide. Often the Thai cop will demand 100,000 baht, if she is 17, or one million baht, if 16 or under. You do not have it? You are turned over. Many guys end up on planes with an assistant DA dispatched from DC, in handcuffs, facing federal statutory rape charges. Laws in the US are peculiar in that many states allow marriage to someone below the age of consent, as long as their parents agree.)

It was very nice that the RTP could act so quickly on the request by the USA to track down this pedophile and place him in custody. Hopefully his extradition back to the state of Alabama will occur soon. When an American is traveling abroad the age of consent that's recognized is on the federal level which is 18 years of age. At 17 you are subject to a shakedown by the cops here, at 16 or under you're talking about the feds coming after you and putting a lot of time, and effort and money behind a conviction, it's like a badge of honor for them. That applies to any American adult.

Some of the worse offenders and most disturbed are those who are friendly, social, helpful and outspoken. Ted Bundy with the women, Gacy being a clown and helpful person in his community, Cosby as a "family man" on TV but a predator in real life, and many others in high positions as they think their status and money makes them immune. A quick google indicates that a handful of US states set the age of consent at 17. Most are at 16. A similar situation in Europe, although Malta sets it at 21.

Globally it seems to vary from 13 up. Very often the circumstances matter. Teacher and student for example, is sometimes set higher.

As to your specific question whether a 17 year old girl can have legal sex with her 19 year old boyfriend, it depends where they are and what their circumstances are.

Where I come from in Australia, the age of consent for females and males is 16.*

In only two states is it 17.

*when I was in my teens many, many years ago, the fear was getting pregnant...not about age of consent!

Way more sensible than 18.

There are several conditions which can nullify giving consent as a 16yo...

eg. Intoxicated, drugged, under duress etc.

Age of consent should be 18 minimum. That would prevent thousands of unwanted pregnancies and lower human trafficking. Way too many unwed mothers and fathers that disappear when young, along with the added STD's that happen to those who aren't educated enough to think of their actions. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought neither JLL nor Elvis were ever prosecuted because they were actually married to the woman in question.

However, Chuck Berry was prosecuted under the Mann Act for taking his underage girlfriend / wife across a State Line.

In America, the age of consent can vary, depending on the state. At this point, the age of consent in many states is 16. Once upon a time, in New Mexico, I believe, it was 14. Anyway, the ages now range from 16 to 18. There are also exceptions to the general rule for those close in age. "Romeo and Juliet" laws.

As for the federal law in question? Yes, they can do that.
