On a day of many upsets, Thailand’s taekwondo flyweight queen Panipak Wongpattanakit did not disappoint in the end, winning her first Olympic gold by a hair on Saturday (July 24) to add to her two world championships.

In the final bout, Spanish 17-year-old Adriana Cerezo Iglesias was seven seconds away from gold when a 2-point body kick from Panipak reversed a 1-point lead, sending her crumpling on the mat in tears.

Panipak dramatically won her first gold in the women’s 49-kilogram final, scoring two points on a body kick inside the final 10 seconds for an 11-10 victory over 17-year-old Adriana Cerezo of Spain. Her gold is only the 10th in Thailand’s entire Olympic history.

I stumbled across this match setting up AIS Play last night - brilliant app BTW, with ~ 16 Olympic channels.

I didn't realize it was the gold medal match until the end. Brief match, and I don't know the rules. Seems a bit like one of those fencing disciplines? I think I was expecting a bit more?

Congrats, and enjoy that 12 million baht.

Good for her.

But maybe someone can explain to me the idea about the head and body protection. I thought this is a fighting sport. Like: Hit someone and it hurts and do it often enough then that person goes down. Or not?

Protective gear is worn in many sports.

Should a boxer not wear a jockstrap and cup?????

Combat sports, I mean those involving punching and kicking, should not be seen at the Olympics.

Why not? Because we love each other?

Personally I think if people want to fight then let them fight. And part of that is getting hurt. What's the point of fighting if you never actually fight?

How woke .

I am disappointed that  feeding people to the lions and letting them fight the lions still isn't an Olympic sport

Concussion and the long term debilitating effects are to be avoided.

The protection offered by the gear worn does not detract from the display of skills required to win and helps ensure a future once an athletes career comes to an end.

The dangers of repetitive head trauma are becoming clearer all the time and anything done to protect sports competitors from them should be welcomed.

Same as in American football as opposed to rugby.

Of all the events in the Olympics I actually dislike this 'kicking' one the most. Looking forward to track & field & swimming.

Last kick of the match and well placed... girl done good, I bet her family are rejoicing.

She'll have life-long  memories and a gold medal to remember her achievements.

The total take is closer to 15 million baht with the annuity the Thai Olympic Committee grants on top. Quite a shift from amateur competition in the old days.

Obviously the American football players are pu##$. But then, looking at the picture above... ????

49kG - what some might say Heavy Medal! ????

I find her rather attractive.

No. Should not wear kilt and drink coffee when fighting. Bad discipline.

Is the coach putting his hand down to pat her on the bottom part of the sport?

Because it is the, timing, skill and placement of the ‘shots’ against a moving and defending opponent which count not the sole ability to inflict damage - sports have evolved.

Well done girl, enjoy it as long as you can.

Good for her, and nice to see her only waving the Thai flag in celebration and not a framed photo!

and not kneeling or protesting as some athletes have done.

Olympic TKD is World Taekwon Do Fedration (<deleted>) and the rules are controlled by the HQ in S. Korea, Kuk Ki Won. Over the years the rules have changed so many times that it hasn't been easy for other countries to keep up with. For example, the so called 'push kick' (Podeo, Miliyo Chagi) (knee raised, touches the shoulder while the lower leg is at 90o pointing straight to the opponent's trunk then stretched out and the sole of the foot making contact) originally scored points in competition. Today it doesn't and other kicks have suffered similarly. The original trunk protector has has seen many changes and has gotten bigger and heavier over the past few years. The difference in techniques in lessons to those in competition has formed a deep division so that really there is the Martial Art and the Sport. ITF Taekwon Do use gloves and instep pads, head protector but no trunk protector. (ITF was the original taekwon do federation in S.K. but is now considered as traitor status there...long story). There are several different views about MA competition ranging from the earliest idea of mirroring actual combat to the more recent sport position.
