BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has had a meeting with Vice President and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, Ignazio Cassis, in which they placed an emphasis on cooperation in public health, trade and investment.

Mr. Cassis paid a courtesy call on Gen. Prayut to mark the 90th anniversary of Thai – Swiss diplomatic relations.

Key points of the meeting were both Thailand and Switzerland agreeing on efforts to revive local tourism and the two countries expressing their willingness to enhance their cooperation to revive tourism once the COVID-19 situation subsides.

The Prime Minister said he would like to invite people from Switzerland to visit Thailand under the Phuket Sandbox model, which will be expanded to other tourist destinations, in the hope that Thailand will welcome more Swiss tourists.

The Prime Minister also lauded Switzerland’s vaccine management. He said Thailand would like to collaborate with Switzerland on the exchange of technology and expertise in messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine development, as well as encouraging investment in setting up a vaccine manufacturing plant in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). He added that Thailand is ready to support companies that want to produce vaccines in the kingdom.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Don Pramudwinai, held bilateral discussions with the Swiss Vice President, with an emphasis on trade and investment promotion to revive the post-pandemic economy, tourism promotion, climate change and sustainable development.

Interesting, what the local media report.

In Switzerland the tone was completely different and heavily overshadowed by the fact, that foreigners hardly stand a chance to get vaccinated with the vaccine of their choice.

The official Swiss community registered with the Swiss embassy is almost 10'000; an unknown number of not-registered add to this figure.

The major concern of all Swiss meanwhile is the vaccination issue as all vaccinations administered in Thailand are not recognized (vaccination certificate invalid) and those living outside the city limits of Bangkok or Chiang Mai have no access to vaccinations whatsoever.

So, in short, reviving tourism is polite political small talk at best. Swiss companies (Diethelm, F.E.Zuellig etc.) are already heavily involved in pharmaceuticals in Thailand; Diethelm's OLIC has been producing licensed pharmaceuticals in Thailand for decades. So there is no imminent "need" for further expansion on that subject either.

We will see, if and what will be consequential from the Swiss minister's visit - the expectations were extremely low before he even arrived and coined by many Swiss as nothing more than a school class field trip!

Basic logic.  The COVID-19 situation will never be allowed to 'subside' therefore tourism will never 'revive.'

They emphasized their cooperation to transfer the wealth of the public to large pharmaceutical conglomerates, corporations, and banks.
The crumbs and carcasses of the feasts and banquets will be swept onto the floor for the magnanimous benefit of the undeserving public.
