Kamrieng (Battambang) The Governor of Battambang province hailed the close cooperation with Thailand’s border provinces such as Chonburi for helping to ensure the success of the two weeks long border lockdown which ended on Thursday night. Soeaking at Kamrieng’s border with Thailand, Governor Ngoun Rattanak told Khmer Times “We communicated, discussed and with the assistance of the Thai ambassador in Phnom Penh who had communicated with our foreign ministry, we managed to secure the Thai side’s full cooperation and assistance in keeping the borders closed.

“The borders were closed to all movement of people between 29 July midnight and 12th August night and the strict border patrols on both sides of the border and close communications ensured the success of this wise move by the Prime Minister. “Whoever who crossed the border illegally were sent back across the border with the cooperation of the Thais and kept there and were cared for and fed while waiting for the borders to re-open. This morning’s exercise which went smoothly is evidence of this close cooperation,” Rattanak said.

He added that provincial authorities have taken all possible measures, including strict control and enforcement of the curfew which is still in effect nightly along with closure of all markets which are often places of high risks for contraction and spread of the virus, bars and other areas where social distancing could not be enforced.

it was Cambodias insistence to close the border.

Thailand wanted it to stay open to keep up trade that generated a lot of income for both countries.

Cambodia wanted to stop the spread of the virus while Thailand followed the money.

Vastly different prerogatives.
