According to a report in the Cambodia China Times, over 500 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals have become Cambodian citizens in the last 12 months – 83% of the total of foreign nationals to receive Cambodian citizenship. The Chinese nationals all received citizenship via the investment route – also known as honorary citizenship, which requires the applicant to invest a sum of at least 1.25 billion riel in Cambodia.

This enables applicants to bypass the required 7 year residence in Cambodia that is normally required for citizenship to be granted. In addition to their investment, applicants for Cambodian citizenship via investment must also meet the following requirements:

Applicant must be 18 years of age or older
Applicant must have a current and valid passport
Applicant must have a current valid visa for entry into Cambodia
Applicant must be of sound mind
Applicant must be in good health

It is believed that most of the new Cambodian citizens have obtained Cambodian citizenship to do business in Cambodia more conveniently – and especially to be able to purchase land without having to use a Cambodian intermediary.
