A reinvigorated action has been initiated through the Cambodia Malaria Elimination Project 2 (CMEP2) to change the trajectory of the preventable and treatable malaria disease which is still posing a burden to the Kingdom. The five-year project, launched on Wednesday, is to further strengthen the capability and capacity of the authorities concerned to survey, prevent, diagnose, manage and report so as to reach the malaria elimination target by 2025.

National Center for Parasitology Entomology and Malaria Control director Dr Huy Rekol who launched the project said it will be implemented in five provinces, namely, Pailin, Battambang, Pursat, Kep, Koh Kong and Kampot. So far this year, he added, there were 2,400 cases with no deaths and efforts were being taken by the government,  USAID and other organisations to eliminate the disease completely from the Kingdom.

“Although the number of cases is coming down, there is a need to eliminate the disease,” he added. US Embassy in Cambodia spokesman Chad Roedemeier told Khmer Times yesterday that CMEP2 is the second project launched by them to help the Cambodian authorities to eliminate malaria with the success seen in the first project.
