Is Pattaya so bad?

Featured Replies

I got a taste of Thailand playing

cricket in the Chiang Mai international 6's in '93 and spent a few days in Pattaya.

Went off back home and did what needed to be done until '06 and started partying in Pattaya 3 or 4 times a year.

Came back in 2013 to live.

East Pattaya, Soi Khaotalo has so much to offer. Wine, women, song....if only they were open????????.

Why do people enjoy bagging Pattaya,

.......bad experiences?

Asking in the "Australia & Oceania Topics and Events"?

Asking in the "Australia & Oceania Topics and Events"?

Moved to the Pattaya forum.

I lived in Jomtien for years, then last June moved to Pattaya to be closer to my friends. I'll be moving back to Jomtien at the end of my contract and taking a Bolt when we want to (and are eventually allowed to) get back together for a few suds. For me, riding a pushbike is what I do, and Pattaya just doesn't offer the same quality of roads. The convenience of being closer to Fascino/Makro/Big C et al isn't worth the trade-off. I wouldn't say I'm bagging Pattaya, instead my druthers are Jomtien.

If that's the only problem just go in different bars, there's enough around.

Jomtien  is a gay area.  Pattaya  is for puying mongers. That being said, one is wise to ask the hotties if they are ladyboys.

There is a Makro near Jomtien and a Big C not far from that, so you don't need to move to Pattaya to be near those.  Not walking distance but minutes away by scooter.

I love visiting Pattaya.

Great restaurants and shopping.

Despite COVID-19 my wife stayed a week in the Hilton.

Grand time.

Rent a motorcycle and cruise around.

Wonderful.

Pretty hard to beat the combination of things Pattaya offers.  Near Bangkok and the main international airport.    Lots of accomodation to suit any budget.  On the ocean with plenty of beaches around for sunbathing.  Koh Larn nearby for even better beaches.  Koh Samet not far for even better beaches still.  Large malls for aircon shopping.  Plenty of dining options for just about everything imaginable.  Large enough for lots of city activities and nightlife, small enough that it's relatively easy to get around.  Quite reasonable prices for everything in general compared to the rest of Thailand.

Oh, and all the red light stuff, but nobody goes there for that.....????

Probably experiences related do drunks, brawls, bad traffic, overcrowding before Covid.

Many expats diss Pattaya because they want to appear to be above the sex angle of living in Thailand. They think that living in Chiang Mai etc absolves them of their own delving into the darker side of human existence. Most of us are, or originally came here, for the wine, women and song, or rather SEX, but some want to give an alternative appearance simply by living away from one of the centres of it all. In fact, Pattaya has been cleaned up compared to 20 years or more ago but many non-Pattaya expats can't accept that. Keeping it 'dirty' in their minds keeps them free of a guilt complex.

So not native English speaker, never mind,if you cannot afford it,stay in your mud hut

For me I was told if you become more entrenched into the Thai culture and the type that has their eyes opened and not with tunnel vision it will eventually get to you?  I know guys living here have a very narrow view of life, they eat western, play western, socialize western live on the Darkside and in town bars, girls, drink that is it. If that is the case you luckily narrow to how much you get bashed but if one isn't as lucky that is why whenever you log on to Asean or majority of Forums in regards to Thailand you read and will see majority have a negative view or as many say bashing of Thais.

No one including me came to Thailand wanting to feel like that but after a while the constant beating bashing it wears on a person it doesn't mean we hate the place or its people I'm glad Asean is around to let up vent and express ourselves. That is pretty much the same where ever one is the grass is never greener some where else?????

Whenever the pressure gets to me I'm just happy to have choices one of them is going out eating western, then visit a number of A/C gogos and relax and view the steaks like in a butcher shop?  Should I have a steak or go cheap for a hamburger?????

I lived in Pattaya for about a year but much prefer my Isaan village for day-to-day stuff.

I love to visit Pattaya 2/3 times a year, pre covid and will continue once the bars have reopened.

I enjoy catching up with my friends who stay there.

I think it depends on what you expect when living in Pattaya

Drinking in bars chasing girls or settle down and enjoy what Pattaya has to offer besides the drinking scene

My Thai partner and I have lived in Pattaya since 2010 and like it--for many of the same reasons Shdmn mentioned.  We have a number of friends living here who also like it.  I think on Forums like this you will always get many more negative responses than positive; more people like to complain--and will take the time to do so--than those who will take the time to praise something.  And, bear in mind that some of the negative responses are from posters who were last here years ago and are likely unaware of all the changes, mostly good, that have occurred the past few years.

I think some of the complainers perhaps have not actually taken the time to explore the whole large Pattaya area--they visit Walking Street, Soi 6, and a few other spots and think that's all there is.  With covid and travel restricted, my partner and I started to explore the Darkside of Pattaya, an area we had seldom been to in 10 years.  We found lakes and parks, biking and walking trails, plenty of restaurants of all kinds, lots of fresh food markets and produce stalls at cheap prices, a diverse population of expats and locals, and lots of nice projects of homes in all price ranges.  We liked the area so much we decided to try living in a single family home with a pool after always living in condos.

Now I'm reaching 10 years in Thailand and most of that in Pattaya. In the start it was for the girls and party. Last 5 years I simply enjoy the chaos traffic and <deleted>ty roads. As long as you know it is like that it's fine. I don't like abandoned smll villages somewhere far away. Now Pattaya has very cheap food and roads and beaches are slowly getting better. I like it this way.

Brawls.? In over 20 years I think I've seen half a dozen.

Drunks.? Most parts of the world have them, Pattaya with thousands of bars has some too.

Bad traffic.? Don't go to Bangkok or Phuket if you think this is bad.

Overcrowding.? If you are more specific I could comment.

Pattaya is what it is and one thing it is, is low crime. Not perfect but good enough for the price.

Yes.

Easy to be negative, please tell us the wonderful things about the Thai place you live.

Pattaya is what Pattaya is.  You can make it pretty much whatever you want it to be.  Sure, it has a nightlife that is off the charts.  There are also a lot of other things to do besides just the nightlife scene.  Have fun.  Live and let live.

Different strokes for different folks, I was born and raised in small city in US  where clubs were open till 2 AM and could find someplace to eat 24 hrs a day. I am not a country boy so no way would live in Issan in Nakhon Nowhere. I have a condo in Bangkok beside  my wifes childhood home where her dad still lives and has 20 apartments to rent. My 3 bedroom home is in Banglamung just out side downtown Pattaya. When we tire of BKK crowds /smog we head down to Pattaya to enjoy our greenery  and can enjoy the beaches, Terminal 21  and other malls. When friends visit I show them around and can take them to visit clubs and nite life as well as Suakawadee and massage places. I like to be able to  go /do almost anything 24 hrs a day if I want  not be stuck out in the jungle. Still have the quiet peaceful area at home.

Pattaya, a good express road system to get there from Bangkok and to the airports. Hua Hin nice but a pain in the butt to get there and back, particularly weekends and holidays times.
