Relatives of victims of enforced disappearance and a network of human rights organisations in Thailand rallied in front of parliament this morning (Wednesday) to demand the speedy passage of a bill against torture and enforced disappearance in this parliamentary session, which ends on September 18th.

The demonstrators held banners protesting against torture and enforced disappearance committed by state authorities against innocent Thai citizens. Poems were also read, telling stories of alleged abuses and excesses by security officials against Muslim Malay people in the South.

Among the demonstrators were the elder sister of Wanchalearm Satsaksit, a political activist, who went missing in June 2020 while living in exile in Cambodia, Suhaimi Luebaesa, representing Muslim youths in the Deep South and Tanat Thanakitamnuay, who reportedly lost an eye in anti-government street protests in Bangkok last month.

However, if perceived to be guilty, they have no problem?

The authorities perceive them as guilty, so doing nought wrong.

Any well intended legislative writ ain't gonna change the way in which these nasty and clandestine activities go on.

What could make a difference is cleansing the systematic criminal corruption that has be become a way of life and accepted way of doing business.

That's a big ask.

That there needs to be a specific law against the government doing "enforced disappearance", i.e. murder, of their perceived political enemies who are basically just saying things the government doesn't like or want to keep hidden is crazy

Just another dog and pony show to create an appearance of accountability.

Meanwhile, as always, laws are worthless when they're rarely (if ever) enforced.

You can have all the laws you want, but if no one gives a damn, and if they’re not enforced, what’s the point? I’m sure there are laws against corruption, yet countless people shamelessly enrich themselves through corruption and get away with it.
