Bangkok on high alert for violence

I posted this in the poll thread, but this may explain why things are taking their time. It looks like they first they read the charges, then the defence, which the second judge to speak is now doing, then the verdict {by a third judge?} for the democrats and then the same process for the TRT issues.

I think

I don't know much about Thai law and proceedings.

But from what my take on listening from the radio, do all the judges have to read the charges and defenses for all the accused political parties before a verdict can be given :o

The Constitution Tribunal rules that election law has expired after the coup so the Democrat was cleared in one of four charges.

We Westerners sure are an impatient lot....

It's worth noting that the reading into the record process is not unknown in the West either, and so the court is following its formal procedure, especially since AFAIK there is no appeal possible.

I seem to recall the same process for Thaksin's asset concealment charges.

So far very confusing, and still 3 more to go.

The ruling was the first verdict in four counts of charges against the Democrat.

Judge Somchai read the verdict, saying the organic law had not been exempted by any coup order so it was annulled by the coup.

The tribunal is still reading other verdicts.

So its unlikely that their party will face dissolution then?

A good start, but although I dont speak Thai the teletext below keeps saying that Thaksin is guilty of many wrongdoings.

we shall have to wait and see what the verdict is on him and TRT

Nothing is clear yet. Still awaiting news on the other 3 charges

- then we get the TRT

Tribunal rules suit against Democrat legitimate

The Constitution Tribunal ruled Wednesday that the Democrat Party had not breached the MPs and Senatorial Election Act because the act had lapsed after the coup.

The ruling was the first of four points of legal considerations related to the case of the Democrat.

Reading the legal interpretations before the verdict, Judge Somchai said the organic election had not been exempted by any coup order so it was annulled by the coup.

But the Democrat lost in the second, third and fourth points of legal disputes.

In the second point of judicial reviews, the tribunal ruled that the suit against the Democrat was legitimate because the party was not given enough time and the election commission did not rush to file charges against the party as claimed by the Democrat.

In the third point of review, the tribunal ruled that EC chairman had filed the suit against the Democrat in line with the party law.

In the fourth point of disputes, the tribunal ruled that the suit was still legitimate although the election was annulled because the alleged crime had already committed.

The tribunal is still reading other verdicts.

Deputy TRT leader takes refuge in safe house

The former Defence Minister and Thai Rak Thai Party deputy leader, Gen. Thammarak Isarangura Na Ayutthaya, declined to critique the decision of the Constitutional Court today (May 30).

Reporters conducted a telephone interview with Gen. Thammarak to get his views on the Constitutional Court's political party dissolution verdict. He declined to criticize the court's ruling and only stated briefly that he does not wish to express his views on the matter at this time.

Gen. Thammarak revealed that he is currently following televised coverage of the Constitutional Court's decision at his safe house in an undisclosed location. Gen. Thammarak affirmed that members of the Thai Rak Thai Party will not be gathering to discuss events transpiring today and that he would not hold a press conference.

Any word on the TRT verdict yet?

Only had 1 out of 4 for Democrats, even though the Judge has talked about everything under the sun even CTX scanners!

If this continues I don't see them even getting to TRT before 6

They haven't finished with the Democrats yet

edit, agreed perhaps they don't want to issue a verdict until its late at night and everyone is tucked up in bed.

From the Nation's editor's blog

The Tribunal ruled that all the activities were nornal political practices that benefited the Thai public interests. The Tribunal said the Democrats did not discourage people from going to the poll, but instead encouraged the public to vote "abstension" to protest against Thaksin.

Chiang Rai reports no major political activity

Chiang Rai officials report no major political movements in response to Constitutional Court’s verdict on the political parties’ dissolution case today (May 30).

Police, military and administrative officials continue to monitor conditions in Chiang Rai province in order to prevent violent incidents from occurring. A large number of checkpoints have been established throughout the province to screen for suspicious groups of people who may be attempting to travel to Bangkok to or to the Chiang Rai provincial hall to conduct political demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Chiang Rai police have deployed four companies of crowd control officers to safeguard the provincial hall, in preparation for possible unrest following the court’s ruling this afternoon.

TRT caretaker Khunying Sudarat demands the government and CNS return power to Thai people soon

Thai Rak Thai Party acting deputy leader Sudarat Keyuraphan urges the interim government and the Council for National Security (CNS) to organize a meeting between political parties so they can discuss the upcoming election and the return of power to the Thai people.

Khunying Sudarat insists that whatever the Constitutional Court's verdict on the party dissolution case will be, the supporters should stay put and they should not get involved with any political movement. Most importantly, the Thai Rak Thai Party respects and follows His Majesty the King's royal speech. She views people can still support her party's policy whether or not the party would be dissolved, adding that it is too soon to address the party's future plan.

Considering the high profile of this case it is good that so much background is read into the record and also being listened to by a huge national audience. It is also good that to date the reading of the verdict to date is concentrating on the law.
