BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister of Public Health says he is confident the COVID-19 situation will be better next year, while the rollout of booster shots for the general public officially began today, specifically for those previously vaccinated with inactivated virus vaccines.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul today presided over the official COVID-19 booster shot rollout ceremony, at a mass vaccination center located at CentralPlaza Westgate shopping mall in Nonthaburi.

The government selected today as the official rollout date of booster shots for the general public, to coincide with Mahidol Day which commemorates the passing of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, who is regarded as the father of modern medicine in Thailand.

On this special occasion, the Thai government has set a target of 1 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to be given on this day.

The vaccination center at CentralPlaza Westgate is one of the mass vaccination sites serving residents of Nonthaburi in the province’s Nont Prompt vaccination drive. The booster shot rollout is now available to those who were fully vaccinated with two doses of Sinovac vaccine in March-May this year. A shot of AstraZeneca vaccine is being offered as the third dose for this group.

The booster shot rollout is aimed at addressing the insufficient level of immune protection this group of vaccine recipients has against the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The vaccination center is expected to administer a second dose of AstraZeneca to 12,000 people, and booster shots to 500 people.

The Minister of Public Health, said today that health authorities are on track to reach the vaccination targets, while stressing all types of COVID-19 vaccine in Thailand are effective in preventing severe illnesses and death from the disease.

He said more studies will be conducted six months after the second dose, and after the third dose in the booster group, to determine whether additional boosters are needed.

Mr Anutin said the COVID-19 situation should be better next year, while reminding the general public to continue adhering to health and safety measures strictly.

He said the authorities will be making safety assessments to further relax restrictions once the situation improves to an acceptable point, in order to allow a normal livelihood to return quickly.

So if his words are true then the country will be on track to open up either in 6 months, which is next year or when the situation improves to an acceptable point, of which no one here in Thailand knows when or what those requirements will be.....

Really, so next year, no other time frame other than that, well no Sh## Sherlock, in the meantime I wouldn't boast too much about delivering those booster shots intravascularly as in Phuket, the manufacturers advise against it as do scientific studies on covid vaccines injected this way.

Well, I can take over his position. I believe it will be better next year and quarantine no longer needed.

Is that insufficient due to Chinese vaccines being given as first and second dose  ?

Scandinavian countries lifting all covid regulations (not all countries). No distancing, no masks. Nothing.

What are we gonna do when the results start coming in and the apocalypse does not take place there as these regulations are lifted? Will we be sane and follow suit? I hope so. Doubt it though.

No prizes for that guess.

And Anutin, Christmas will be on 25th December next year. We must use the same fortune teller.

They could train a Monkey to do a better job than him!

Hello ,

Great to roll out booster shots ???? But how do you do booster shots when less then 25% of Thailand’s population is fully vaccinated to begin with !!??
Makes ABSOLUTELY NO COMMON SENSE!!

Next year. That buys them a lot of breathing space.

Is there a contradiction here?

Anutan is still saying people WILL BE GETTING Sinocvac as a 1st jab through October, I assume he has to get rid of the 9 mill shots he has just bought and received a "spotters fee" for.

Dont even want to name the vaccine anymore, after having stated it was all bullet proof last year.

So in effect he has said nothing that we didn't already know and he just fancied a few sound bytes to go with the photo opportunity.

Let's all prepare for the excuses for Covid22.

Maybe the virus just dies, after all nothing lives forever except bad politicians.

Speaking from his extensive medical knowledge and training , absolutely no reason to doubt or question his prediction ????

Stating the bleedin' obvious while masquerading as an expert.

Yep it will all workout with them saving vaccine by jabbing it under the skin like a TB test.

1. So, he's given up on this year?

2. Very imprecise as to in what way "better", and more precisely when "next year".

3. I wish they'd stop making predictions (including meaningless ones like this one), and get on with his present job: vaxing the population.

4. Too much here of issuing a quirky press release - that leaves us scratching our heads - then off to lunch.

People in rural provinces don’t count. C’mon, get with the program.

People (Farangs) that I know in the rural provinces have just had an AZ booster.

They will get another in December.

Anutin has no credibility. He has been blowing hot air on the waves since the plandemic started. He is a disgrace. Am I being charitable? You betcha.

He's drawing on his decades of medical training and experience to make such calculated predictions. (I was half expecting the usual "and we estimate this will generate zillions of billions of baht for the economy")
