Bank account and ATM card for a 12 year old kid

Featured Replies

Hi,

does anyone her know if it's possible for a 12 year old kid to open a bank account and get an ATM card for it?

I would like to send his pocket money directly from my account and he could use ATM whenever he needed something.

When I'm back in Thailand it's easy.  I'll open another account on my name and let him the card for withdrawals.

But until then I'd like to byass his mother.

Thank you for your ideas/advices

I know it's possible to open a savings account in a child's name as we opened one for our son when he was 9 years old, but not sure about the ATM card.

If your goal is to give him some spending money and he has a smartphone there's lots of apps to use a digital wallet.

Thankyou for the reply. You're right, you can open a saving account on kids name. I did thatyears ago.

do you know more about digital wallets and where he could pay with that?

My 14-year-old opened one herself on Saturday. She did it with Kasikorn online.

Her mother took her to the supermarket to get a pin or something.

She doesn't want/need a card.

Several of the big digital wallets used in Thailand are; Prompt Pay, Rabbit Line Pay, True Wallet, and the bank's wallet apps. Also there's others like Google Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay.

I'm not an expert on using these forms of payment but I know my wife uses her Kasikorn bank app to pay for stuff all over town, even when buying fruit and vegetables at the open markets.

She just told me that she ordered a debit card from them and it is being posted. She said they have to be over 12 years old. She still has never set foot in the bank.

Thank you very much. This should be possible for my son.
