Thailand will officially enter the winter season on November 2nd, the Meteorological Department announced today, October 29th.

According to the statement, the wind that currently covers Thailand at an altitude of 100 meters to a height of 3,500 meters has changed to northeasterly and easterly winds while the upper winds moving at an altitude of 5,000 meters have continuously shifted to western winds and met the lowest temperature in the morning in upper Thailand, resulting in the drop of the temperature and the cold weather.

However, at the start of winter this year, the weather conditions in upper Thailand are still variable. Thundershowers are likely over the country while heavy rainfall is still expected in the southern region.

I thought the winter of discontent starts Monody 1st?

For the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, Winter begins on Tuesday, December 21st... the Winter Solstice.

Astronomically.

Meteoroligist have differing definitons.

Winter starts on December 1.

But the thread is quite clear and in line with weather predictions from other sources (ECMWF).

Nov 3 the rain should have stopped for most of the country.

How can the winter solstice be the beginning of Winter? Surely it must be the middle of Winter. And when confined to Winter in the UK this was always a favourite day of mine knowing that from then on each day would get longer and lighter.

For those overwhelmed by the term "winter" please replace by cool/dry season.

Winter season? So, will there be a chance to use my skis? Which province will have 50cm snow?

Hokkaido  ????

Why call it Winter? I thought Thailand had 3 seasons, hot, wet and cold. Not bloody spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Anyways, Astronomical winter, in the northern hemisphere starts on the winter solstice. In UK, there is also meteorological winter starting 1 December. Go figure.

Where I'm from

Meteorologists define winter as the period when the average day temperature is permanently 0.0 degrees centigrade or lower. So, we can have winter in the north and other parts still have autumn.
