Now open we will not shut again,  mayor makes pledge on behalf of Thailand and Pattaya

Pattaya's strongarm mayor - forced to play second fiddle to the pandemic over the last two years - has declared that there is no going back.

Speaking at a press call in Jomtien to mark the reopening of Thailand yesterday, Sontaya Kunplome said that Thailand and Pattaya will not close again, reported Daily News.

The mayor was joined at the Dong Tan bend by industry leaders, Thai traditional massage women and his own staff.

He pledged that his resort had been vaxxed and everyone would be good hosts to the foreigners that are expected from now until the end of the year.

The media said they would come from 45 countries and one territory - a little out of date already after it was announced elsewhere that 63 low risk nations are on the "no quarantine" list.

Sontaya said that Pattaya has 100 SHA+ businesses to welcome the foreign tourists in safety and confidence.

So how many foreigners does he think will come until the New Year countdown?

He said that in pre-pandemic years 1 million could be expected in this period of the high season.

This year he is hoping for 20% of that figure - 200,000 people.

With sixty days to go that'll mean 3-4,000 a day.

The mayor said these were numbers expected from the TAT and the tourism sector, perhaps distancing himself slightly from the expectations, notes ASEAN NOW.

The mayor spoke about Pattaya being a safe, blue zone as deckchair vendors joined the optimistic 'no going back' party.

The man has been stood pounding his drum and had to stand down before.

He will do as he is told if it all turns bad!

No going back even if the virus becomes stronger than the vaccine?  As new strains have already emerged in other countries that the vaccine has shown not to be effective against will political  promises  hold true?  I think still in so much as the way forward and what will be in regards public safety  vs tourism is still in it's infancy to say ,"no going back."

This chap is an utter fool..same as many others in authority here...he will do what his masters above tell him to do and nothing more.

Try engaging brain before opening mouth.

Can he be jailed for "fake news" in case they shut down again?

Why to mention the "traditional" massage?

Aren't they all traditional? ????????

Well, I'm going to play devil's advocate here but...

Pattaya's mayor, Khun Sontaya is actually a GOOD mayor, surprisingly enough.

If you knew what is going on behind the scenes in the city, you'd be surprised to know how much $h!t he has to deal with on a daily basis.

Out of all the mishaps Prayuth's administration has done, picking Sontaya Kunplome as mayor for a crooked city as Pattaya was actually the right thing to do, if not the only wise thing to do.

Sontaya is the son of the Chon Buri's deceased mafia big boss, the city has literally been in a relatively stable hiatus since he got "elected" as a mayor.

Honestly; when was the last time you've been drugged or mugged in Pattaya since his "election"? When was the last time you've been shaken down by the local gangs since his "election"? When was the last time the PWA administration or the Pattaya Teedin office asked for a bribe since his "election"?

Right, never.

And guess why Pattaya is a very safe city besides being a very seedy city? Because of the Kunplome family and Sontaya being "in charge".

Basically it takes a radical crook to control all of crooks. Nothing happens in the city without his seal of approval.

Sontaya Kunplome, believe it or not, is the best mayor we have had in years and I hope for everyone's safety, including yours, he stays mayors for the years to come.

When Sontaya talks, the "others" listen. And that is what you want in a place like Pattaya.

What on Earth are you on about... most of the time he has been mayor the town has been in lockdown..... the City is an utter mess of dug up roads and pavements and derelict in many areas. There are people sleeping rough on the streets.

During Covid he has made quite a few declarations only to be slapped down by the Provincial governor... and he goes back to being quiet.....

Anyhow, interesting perspective, and I commend that.

If you think you have it bad now, well... you'd have it way worse if it wasn't for his family controlling the area.

Pattaya is neither a Disneyland for adults nor the Family Friendly Resort some may want it to be.

I'll leave it at that.

I have lived here a while now and first came here around 1982..... it was nice back then and has gone through a lot of change.

It seems that unfortunately he's forgotten it's not upto him but upto his superior Muppets in Bangkok.

Curfew lifted and calendar turned a page, but it's just as "open" as last month. Which is still basically CLOSED.

You really think anyone takes him seriously?  Politician's promises the world over are taken with a grain of salt today but in Thailand no-one listens to them in the first place (except for a laugh) lol!

And when, or if, the Tourists return in any great numbers, the low life will crawl out from under their Rocks to continue their occupation of scamming, theft and assault.

Of that you can be certain.

We will see how good Khunploum is then, when the streets of his City are running with Gold again.

I've heard Thai promises before, yes, love you big and the buffalo

is feeling dicky, send money now.

How many small and medium business have been shut out for two years and now not allowed a place at the gravy-train with the expectations that they'll languish and die-off - as who needs the competition for the shrunken tourism dollars that are drying up and heading to friendly nations without the gauntlet of restrictions?

I've been living here for 10 years and was coming here since 2004, never have I been mugged, drugged or shaken down, I also remember when his younger brother was mayor, never had a problem, so I've no idea what you are prattling on about.

Never say never.

Saw them all in their yellow shirts and black jackets today surveying the scene at the entrance to Walking Street like a bunch of clueless gofers. I think they were trying to work out how big a piece of cardboard they need to cut to cover the hole they dug up a couple of months ago.

I couldn't agree more.

Mr. Mayor, the most part of your resort is still closed and under prohibition.
