Mother Nature activists convictions upheld, sentences reduced

Phnom Penh Court of Appeal today upheld the sentencing the of three youth activists working with the Mother Nature NGO’s sentences. The three were accused of inciting people against the authorities and the government. The offences were committed between 2017 and 2020.

 

Phnom Penh Court of Appeal has reduced their sentences, which were given by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, to from 20 months to 18 months in prison each to only a year and two months in prison each, with the rest of their sentences being suspended. The three are prohibited from travelling abroad for a period of three years.

 

Presiding Judge Yun Narong identified the three accused as Thon Ratha, 29, male; Long Kunthea,  22, female;  and Phuon Keoreaksmey, 21, female. “Based on the accused confessions’ answers during their appeal hearing on October 19, 2001 and the evidences seized from them by police, the judges’ council at Phnom Penh Court of Appeal has found them guilty as charged and sentenced by Phnom Penh Municipal Court,” Judge Narong read, in today’s verdict.
