Thailand seeks to reopen Tha Sen and Ban Nong Ian border checkpoints to boost trade with Cambodia

Thailand’s Commerce Ministry is aiming to speed up talks with Cambodia to reopen additional checkpoints with neighbouring Cambodia to boost trade between the two nations. The Tha Sen checkpoint in Trat province and the Ban Nong Ian border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province are being targeted for reopening for  Trade between Thailand and Cambodia to grow.

 

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said that the reopening of the two border checkpoints will help increase border trade activities between Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand has reopened a total of 48 checkpoints with 49 still closed due to the pandemic. Thailand’s cross-border trade, including transit trade, tallied 1.2 trillion baht between January and September, up 31.6% from the same period last year.

 

Transit trade involves the passage of goods through more than one country. Of the total, exports made up 778.3 billion baht, up 38%, while imports rose 22.7% to 497.1 billion baht. Last year, overall border trade, including transit trade, fell 1.7% from the previous year to 1.31 trillion baht.
