Interim government approves 4% salary raise for civil servants

The Cabinet has resolved to increase the salaries of government officials by four percent, starting October 1st this year.

The Government Spokesman, Army Captain Yongyuth Mayalarp, says the Cabinet says the increase will also cover the retired government officials and the government employees nationwide. The maximum wage will be at 11,000 baht and the minimum wage will be at 7,700 baht. The government has granted a budget of 17 billion baht for the readjustment plan.

He adds that the Office of the Civil Service Commission (OCSC) will study the remuneration in the government sector to reduce the unjust payments for local staff in the long run

It's important to notice that this hike, within the budget for 2008, is directly linked to a wider deficit.

Bravo ! A perfect example indeed of the "sufficiency economy" at work. :o

FISCAL BUDGET

2008 deficit to rise by Bt45 bn

The government has increased the budget deficit for fiscal 2008 to accommodate a 4-per-cent pay hike for state employees and also finance a number of social projects to shore up the sluggish economy at the grassroots level.

That may be a good idea to stimulate the economy a little bit.

That may be a good idea to stimulate the economy a little bit.

Sure. That's the idea. Along with some political motivations. Thaksin did exactly the same in october 2006.

The point is : they are breaking our ears with the "suficiency economy" since last september, they are even paying people to make conferences to explain the concept (even abroad...).

And basically, they do exactly the opposite. It's tasty.

So my guess : just another populist policy, just before the elections, with absolutly no long term vision.

For instance, it would make sense to reduce the number of civil servants and to pay them much more.

I never heard such (an insanely liberal) idea here... :o

They are talking about a hike for 2 millions person (civil servants + other state employees) ! Can you imagine ? I mean in France we a have a (sad) record of 5 millions of state employees. For a population more or less equivalent. But many more public services... And a GPD x10 compare to Thailand.
