The lady on the phone told me to take my machine back to the shop and demand that they replace this machine with a XP or VISTA compliant machine :o she obviously doesn't know Thailand!

Anyhow, I understand that all people are trying to do is give me advice and help and I have taken it all in, and in the end I have a machine I am happy with and that will do for a year or two until I get the fever again :D

I'm not trying to upset you, just trying to point out a possible problem, if I were you I would grab the serial number from the PC and give HP a call and check the warranty situation. If it's all above board then I'll retract my opinion, B4,000 for the standard HP 3 year warranty is not a huge price to pay.

I understand that mac.wheeler, I've just called HP UK, had a right laugh, it seems that Pantip aren't the ones ripping me off, it's actually HP!! Follow the link below and scroll to the bottom of the page where it says 'SOFTWARE' here it explains that my warranty will be broken if I install any OS other than MS DOS on the machine, so forget what the shop in Pantip told me, THEY HAD ALREADY BROKEN THE WARRANTY FOR ME! WHAT KIND OF MANUFACTURER SUPPLIES MACHINES MEANT FOR ONLY MS DOS OS's??

The helpful lady on the phone said that I was perfectly able to change the RAM without breaking the warranty but that if I installed another OS on my machine then the WARRANTY WOULD BE BROKEN...

You could probably get around this fairly easily, if your PC breaks - whip out the hard drive and get someone to re-install your MS-DOS on it.

I was thinking that myself, would they ever know that any other OS had been installed?

Nope, there's really no way to know. At least not a feasible way.

Anyways, that is a very strange policy indeed. HP must be getting nuts if it has policies like this.

Another thing Nikkijah, you don't need to quote everything. Just quote if it's not obvious what you're referring to.

I like to quote everything to make it all as clear as possible...

So anyway, the lady on the phone said that my warranty would be broken if I installed any other software than the software supplied and officially this PC is only supplied with MS DOS, she guided me to the website where the officially supplied software is MS DOS, see link in my previous post.

It seems ridiculous that this is that case and that I am being told contradiction stories about warranties!

I believe you talked with a rep outside of Thailand who does not have a clue and is making it up as she goes. The operating system is not DOS but it is supplied without operating system in Thailand with basic DOS installed only to allow easy set up of your choice of operating systems. This is my reading but I would contact the Thai number printed on the side of the case if you have questions as this is who we would deal with. Also as far as I know the warranty is only one year in Thailand, not the normal HP three years. As I never expect warranty service here anyhow have not been too concerned.

In defence of HP Pavillion (if necessary): I moved into my house a bit more than 4 years ago. Shortly after moving in I bought a HP Pavilliion from Pantip. Apart from a few two week holidays my PC has been on constantly. Never had a problem with it.
