I was originally planning a couple of months in Southeast Asia early next year, however a change in circumstances and possible travel partner getting a "life" and not able to make it, means I am going to spend alot more time in the region as part of a Pan-Asia (minus the PRC due to Olympics no doubt cranking prices!) trip.

I will be flying into BKK and upfront will be getting a double entry tourist visa(is this effectively 2 60day visa's?) to alleviate the onward flight malarkey that may (most likely may not!) have finally settled into a predictable rut by next year unlike what it seems now!

What I want to know is would this mean I can spend a total of 180 consecutive days in Thailand?

(should I so choose to of course? ideally I want to spend 30 days or so in northern thailand, 30 in laos, 30 in cambodia, 30 in vietnam and then 30 or so again in Southern thailand, however I know that plans are fleeting when you actually hit the ground running!)

This 180 days is each of the entry's I get extended with the purchasable 30days from Immigration in Bankgok - although can I then add a further 7 days to each of these?

Sorry to sound confusing, but this is what I think is the situation after spending alot of time reading up on this on various sites.

The Caveat to each reply will be ....... that is next year .... and today is today.

I am unsure when the second entry must be activated by ....

but yes with a double entry tourist visa you could get roughly 178 days in Thailand. You MIGHT even be able to get an extension of a few days at the end IF you had an onward ticket at that point during those few days <without it you'd get nothing I think>

If you do the itenerary you have listed the answer is of course ... 'no' you cannot do 180 days in Thailand :o

good luck and have a fun trip

Nor could you stay 180 days without leaving Thailand as to activate the second tourist visa requires you enter again.
