My wife and I are going to Australia for 3 months while I have cancer treatment in Brisbane. Does anyone know of any good , cheap, preferably self contained places to stay ? I'm very grateful for all suggestions.

There are thousands of dormant apartments in Brisbane. Start from here:

What I would do, I would call any of real estate agencies (Raine & Horne, for example) and tell them what I need, where the hospital is and whatever else is needed.

They would know better which property suits you, rather than guessing without knowing the place.

I knew of someone who was going to Brisbane on a regular basis and he was able to get good and inexpensive places even for stays as short as 2-3 days. All that from the pool of apartments sitting idle with "for rent" sign on them.

I strongly suggest you take a look at the Queensland Cancer Council website.

There are a number of options available to accomodate patients and their partner on a self contained basis for a nominal fee, for example CWA Lodge.
