Philippines urged to go beyond neutrality and assist Ukraine

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines should act to provide assistance to Ukraine and move beyond its "neutral" stance on the Russian invasion of the former Soviet republic, panelists at a webinar on the conflict said Wednesday.

 

"The only known antidote that the weak state can use against invasion or annexation by a powerful neighboring state is a mutual defense security with other states to provide a balance of power," retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio said.

 

Policy advisor and Geopolitics professor Richard Heydarian said that the Philippines has taken "a very deplorable case of toxic neutrality" in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
