Covid: A timely reminder to protect the elderly who are most at risk

Chulalongkorn medic Dr Opas Phuttacharoen had a timely reminder ahead of the holiday season about protecting the elderly from contracting Covid.

 

He reminded the Thai public as Songkran appears on the horizon that over 75s are 8.5% more likely to die from Covid than younger people and the over 85s have 10.6% more risk, reported Siam Rath.

He also warned that the greater the number of illnesses people have the greater the threat that Covid presents to the elderly. 

 

He pointed to problems being experienced among the aged in Hong Kong. 

 

Even though it's only Omicron so less severe, the effect on the elderly is still ever present.

Vaccinating children, or anyone for that matter, does not prevent them from contracting the virus. In general it merely reduces the seriousness of the illness. They can still pass it on.

 

The most effective way to protect the vulnerable is to keep them isolated from the population at large. However that, in my opinion, is neither practical nor desirable.

That’s very Laudable ….. but Mission Impossible. It’s all the Vulnerable who are Responsible to Isolate Themselves. Their Business if they chose to Move Outside or Meet People.
