BANGKOK (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has said it expects a lively Songkran atmosphere this year compared to 2021.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said his agency projected that 3.34 million Thais will take domestic trips during this Songkran period from April 13-17, generating at least 11 billion baht in revenue.

Yuthasak also said the average occupancy rate during the long Thai New Year holiday would likely reach 41%, citing Thailand’s still-recovering economy as a major contributing factor. Despite an improving overall outlook compared to last year, the Kingdom is continuing to deal with repercussions from the pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

This year, the TAT chief said people have opted to travel to nearby provinces using personal vehicles and scaled down expenses.

Three major TAT events will be held during this year’s Songkran holiday period, specifically in Bangkok, Songkha and Ayutthaya. The events are expected to attract about 570,000 people and generate 2.1 billion baht of revenue.

Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, president of the Thai Hotels Association, meanwhile revealed that 79% of hotels in Thailand operated normally in March. That was up from 72% February, with 2% of hotels still temporarily closed.

Marisa also acknowledged that most hotel operators underperformed, with the majority of their customers being domestic travelers. She indicated that foreign visitors would be crucial to revitalizing Thailand’s tourism scene.

quote from OP.

All that really means that some people will travel and spend baht in another place, instead of spending it at home.

Net gain to Thailand = zero.

In fact it will most probably be a net loss when the cost of hospital treatment, funerals and vehicle repairs are taken into consideration.

Yes, with 99% of the money already existing in the country. Money that the same people could have used to pay of some of the gigantic household depth instead.

The winners are the funerals, temples, hospitals and police, the car repair centres ....and so on

From what I can see and the measures in place to curb happiness it looks to be identical to last year.

Why don't we all just stay at home during Songkran and count are blessing that we don't have Covid yet. A lot of my friends have Covid and they say 0-Fun.

True. I expect to do a good number of trips to the fridge, stocking up with beer and watching action movies.

Does that mean that 19% have permanently closed?
