BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Navy has assured it can review other options if its 13.5 billion baht deal to procure a submarine from the China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company (CSOC) is deemed untenable, due to the company’s inability to acquire a German-made engine as stipulated in the agreement.

The company, Motor and Turbine Union (MTU), is refusing to supply China with the MTU396 diesel engine that would be used in the S26T Yuan-class submarine because of an embargo that prevents the sale of equipment classified as military/defense items.

According to Navy Chief of Staff Adm Tharoengsak Sirisawat, additional discussions will be held with CSOC near the end of the month to determine whether the issue can be resolved.

Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha had previously instructed the navy to do everything possible to complete the deal, but said the contract could be terminated should China fail to meet the terms of the agreement.

With military run countries, it never gets better. The writing is on the wall.

It will progressively get worse.

the answer is not have one. Te military don't trust the navy to have a submarine. The last time they had one they staged a coup. Would have worked but they got stuck in the Chao Phraya river.

If they can’t get the subs the top brass will figure out another scam so they can get paid a lot of money in offshore for an account the reason they want this deal to go through as we don’t get through absolutely a lot of money corruption at its best TIT

With covid spreading very fast in small towns north of Chiang Mai, and hospitals running out of good medicine, young people being sent home with covid and infect their families. Everyone is saying the government is broke. So yes this must be a good time to spend all that money on a Sub.???

But it does get better with "civilian"-run countries???

Not that most people would ever freely choose to live in "military-run" countries, but it surely is difficult to find so-called "democratic" countries that inevitably "get better."

Besides, as Eisenhower reminded us in 1960, countries are generally (pun intended) ruled by their military-industrial complexes....

Any problem with Chinese engine?????

The Manhattan Rebellion, 1951. Led by RTN submariners, but a destroyer was used, HTMS Sri Ayutthaya. And it got stuck at Memorial Bridge which was not raised.

This is why submarines were off the table until the most recent interregnum, and submariners considered persona non grata.
