Crime Novice Monk 16 Shoots Senior Monk Over Unreturned Loan
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 16-year-old novice monk resorted to gunfire at a well-known temple in Pattani Province after a senior monk failed to repay borrowed money. At 09:00 on 11 August, police at Khok Pho station were alerted to a shooting incident inside a temple located in Sai Khao subdistrict, Khok Pho district, Pattani. Officers, including investigators and related authorities, promptly arrived at the scene. The victim, a 32-year-old monk, was rushed to Khok Pho Hospital and is reported to be conscious and in stable condition. The suspect, a 16-year-old novice monk residing in the same temple, fled the scene initially but was later captured by police near a nearby residence. Authorities seized a homemade .38 calibre pistol abandoned close to the incident site. Preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute: the novice was enraged over the senior monk’s failure to return money he had borrowed. Community Tourists Flock to Buriram’s 8th World Standing Meatball Contest
Picture courtesy of Amarin Buriram’s famous culinary tradition took centre stage, as Thai and foreign visitors flocked to the 8th “World Standing Meatball Championship” festival, expected to generate over 10 million baht for the local economy. The event, held from 10–12 August on Phithak Soi, Rom Buri Road, was officially opened by Buriram Deputy Governor Chamroen Waenpetch. Organised by Buriram Municipality in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (Buriram Office), the provincial tourism industry council, the local tourism business association, private sector networks and vendors, the festival is part of the province’s strategy to promote itself as a “hub of Khmer civilisation and world-class sports.” The standing meatball, skewered meatballs served with a distinctive dipping sauce and eaten while standing, has become an iconic local delicacy, with global recognition boosted by international superstar Lisa of BLACKPINK. The festival aims to showcase this unique food culture, encourage tourism and strengthen collaboration between government, businesses and the community. Many renowned meatball vendors from all 23 districts of Buriram took part, offering their signature recipes. Highlights included competitions for the province’s best meatballs and dipping sauces, eating contests in the “Sao Kradong Champion” and “Mama & Family Champion” categories, a meatball-skewering race and live performances from popular artists. On the opening day, the atmosphere was lively, with large crowds sampling meatballs on the spot and buying takeaway portions. Organisers expect the three-day festival to attract thousands of visitors and generate significant income for vendors and the wider tourism sector. Deputy Governor Chamroen said the event not only promotes tourism but also supports the sale of a product that is unique to Buriram. “Our standing meatballs are famous worldwide. Israel slaughters 5 more journalists
Accredited journalist, Anas al-Sharif's death was not the kind of inevitable collateral damage that can take place in any war; for want of a better word, Sharif was the subject of a state-sponsored assassination. The Israeli authorities say he was a terrorist, belonged to Hamas, and served as the leader of a cell. They’ve produced some documentary evidence, but this has not impressed the independent observers who’ve examined it, and it raises the question of why, if it was so compelling, it was not released sooner. It certainly does not give any lawful reason for his killing, still less that of his Al Jazeera colleagues – correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Moamen Aliwa and Ibrahim Zaher, and their assistant Mohammed Noufal – none of whom has been claimed by the Israelis to have had any links to Hamas. The state-sponsored killing of journalists is another way to limit freedom of speech The Independent rebuts Israel's reason for banning international journalists entering Gaza: Truth, as the old cliche goes, is the first casualty of war, and the fact is that Israel – unusually – has banned international journalists from covering the conflict. The Israeli authorities say it is not safe to do so, a grim irony given Sharif’s fate. That, though, is not a matter for them to judge: it is one that should be left to the many news organisations, including The Independent, that have proudly dispatched brave journalists into even more hazardous environments over the course of many decades.
