The opposition Pheu Thai Party said on Thursday the government’s decision to cut the Ministry of Education’s budget while continuing to buy four new fighter planes showed a lack of attention to Thai education.

“Under the guidance of General Prayut Chan-ocha, the budgetary of this administration is like a rerun of bad movies,” said Arunee Kasayanond, deputy secretary-general of the Pheu Thai Party.

“It is still not focusing on the effectiveness of providing the best benefit for the people and they are still basing it on the habit of copying last year budgetary,” Arunee added.

I'd say the educated here are already under educated !   I'd also say that 90% of educated Thais have no clue as to anything current or historical about the outside world !

Yep. No big surprise.  Keep the Military happy, because they keep him in power directly and indirectly.  And keep the masses dumb, another Military power trick.  Selfishness,  power mongering,  but  mostly pathetic.

This recent Aljazeeera documentary is an excellent (though sad) exposé of the corruption at the hi-so levels of LoS.

Plus, it's always worth recalling Eisenhower's insight into who really rules the roost: the military-industrial complex.

Workers ants don't need education, they get indoctrination from birth to be subservient.

To be fair education has always taken a back seat in Thailand, but Prayut has taken it to a new level.

Education needs thinking and thinking opens eyes and the Thai population will see than  what is wrong and they want changes.... And the army based Government  doesn't want that.. They are in power and want to stay in power... So indoctrinate and brainwash the kids how good Thailand is and how bad the rest of the world and stay in power is their device Most Thais know nothing about what is going on in the rest of the world, World War 2 , no idea, even no idea what tourists want and do on holidays, or where the countries and cultures are.... Everything to keep the sight in the own country which is the best in the world . And those who stand up are being charged with section 112, unrest, and knocked down....

That reminds of of those millions of tablets which PT bought with tax payers' money many years ago for the children in the schools. What happened with them? Was the concept thought trough? Did it improve the education?

Or was is only another scheme to make a lot of money on "commissions" for the connected PT politicians?

As the party responsible for the rice scheme, accusing others of budgetary mismanagement is a classic example of glass houses and stones.

Need more funding for bamboo whips so teachers can beat the students, and knee-pads for the children so they learn to prostrate.

And throw in some scissors/razors for impromptu haircuts.

And then bail-out the massive debt teachers have been allowed to borrow.

Like nearly every single government organization here, corruption is job #1. At this point there's not much that can be done. I'd say burn it down and start over but they'd mess that up too.

You can take this to the bank. The order "toys for uniformed boys" proves, beyond reasonable doubt, the lack of education as they are apparently getting Chinese submarines without engines ........

Make sure the flying saucers come with wings, engines and canopies ????

Education? Forget it, those in charge of education do not want an educated electorate as the latter might start thinking and vote for politicians rather than crooks!

Figures don’t lie. Education expenditures under civilian government were much higher than military government. In contrast, military budget has been increasing every year under Prayut’s government. For some strange reason, defense budget decrease for 2023. Perhaps anticipating a civilian government.

General government expenditure on education (current, capital, and transfers) is expressed as a percentage of GDP. It includes expenditure funded by transfers from international sources to government. General government usually refers to local, regional and central governments.

Meh.

That the newly installed Junta went to great efforts to retrieve these tablets ...

The junta's social and psychological affairs unit scrapped the controversial "one tablet per child" policy initiated by Yingluck Shinawatra's Pheu Thai government less than a month after the May 2014 coup.

says much about how effective the program may have been, that it had to be "controlled". And the junta cancelled the program.

Instead, the money will be used to expand the satellite-based Klaikangwon Palace distance-learning programme to cover schools nationwide and provide resources for impoverished schools.

Also says a lot about you.

The graft at the MoE is LEGENDARY.

Yes, this is a feature of the thai edumacation system.

An edumacated populace will get all pesky and ask uncomfortable questions. And, shudder, raise three fingers.

It is far more serious and pathological than that. They seem to be going out of their way to deliberately AVOID improving education.

"Keep the masses dumb", and "do everything in your power to discourage questions and curiosity", would be reasonable Prayuth slogans, and would appear to be his M.O.

No money (Big) in education.

He's indebted to the army and Thai police for his job.

I think its that way in most South East Asian countries not just here.

At least Thaksin reduced the Military Budget hence the coup ousting him.

Educated masses could prove dangerous.

To be sure there is no misunderstanding: This is the case at least since decades, more likely since forever in Thailand. Also previous governments, who some people see as heroes, didn't improve the education system.

You are right...Even their king names are based on Hindu God named Rama! I am sure most Thais have no clue.

Thaksin did what no other politician before him was able to do. He actually benefitted the masses. Besides universal health care, he actually distribute wealth. An unheard of concept here, and something Prayuth has fought tooth and nail to avoid doing. In addition he pushed to lower the military budget. Likely what got him ousted. Never mess with a sacred cow. The sale of the national satellite was another self created fiasco.

Blaine Harden wrote in the Washington Post: “More than any other politician in Thai history, Thaksin delivered services and redistributed government wealth in rural areas. He instituted universal health care, pushed debt forgiveness for farmers and gave cash to every village in the country.

There is no doubt that Thaksin did some good things for the masses.

But there is also no doubt that he was very corrupt and is a criminal.

Thaksin was already very rich before he started with politics. He could have worked for the people and not for his own pockets and maybe he would still be in charge. But this is not what happened. Thaksin made huge amounts of money for himself. Yes, he gave money to the masses. Why? Because he loved them so much or because he preferred to spend tax payers money to bribe the masses and not his own money?

What many people don't like to see it that there are more choices in Thailand than Thaksin or Prayut. If people would vote for other new honest and competent politicians then they would be governed by other new and hopefully honest and competent politicians. If people vote again and again for the same corrupt incompetent people then there is no chance that things will get any better.

Do you actually know if the scheme was bonafide and effective, or was it just another scam by Pheu Thai?
