Deputy government spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said that Thai PM Prayuth Chan-ocha was delighted with an accolade for its health care programs and Covid-19 response measures.

Thai Rath reported that Thailand was named #1 out of 184 countries in the 2021 survey by the Global Covid-19 Index (GCI) in regards to it Global Recovery Index and Global Severity Index.

The country was also praised for its universal health care program that is reaching 99.61% of those eligible.

47.56 million have registered out of 47.74 million eligible.

Receiving particular praise were the country's responses to HIV treatment and kidney treatment. In these areas Thailand had exceeded targets.

More needed to be done on mental health issues.

Ratchada said that the country had been recognised by the WHO as a medical and healthcare hub.

She said that the aim of the government is health care for all irrespective of age.

She said that the PM said that it doesn't end here, much more needs to be done to bring fairness and universal healthcare to all Thai people. But he was delighted for now.

"Together wewill achieve this," she said, "with nobody left behind".

Thai Rath said that Thailand was #1 in the two indices.

A check on the GCI site showed Thailand currently in 79th place for Covid-19 recovery, notes ASEAN NOW.

Yet the Universal Healthcare is hard to obtain for Thais outside of their bluebook province and location where they are registered.  Many stay registered at their home addresses in the bluebook and do not change to another when they move as many are renting and the Thai owners they rent from do not want to add them to the house book there.  Recently there has been a movement to allow Thais to obtain services outside of the registered hospital location but it really is a problem.  True the Government did pay for Covid care, but now after the first few days they must be transferred to the province of residence or pay the cost out of their own pockets.  The scheme for migrant workers is a farce as well.  Having to pay for the insurance themselves when they do their work permit and annual extension.  I bought my housekeeper a PCH policy, but she still had to buy one through the government which gives less coverage then the one she has......

So basically a bare faced lie. i thought it was prison for spreading fake news?

Patting themselves on the back again for something that was NOT done and is untrue..

Maybe it should read that Thailand was #1 after 78th on the list. A more accurate reporting????

#1 in their own Universe of course would be more like it..After all Thailand is the center of the Universe in their eyes....

Now other countries are recognising Thailand as a hub of something.

When will they realise that other countries are just patting them on the back the same way you would do a kid who ate all his veggies.

Strange people, always looking for validation.

A government that was truly delivering happiness and prosperity to its people , would not need to rig elections and hobble its opposition !

Except that the government is reporting on 2021 figures. AN is quoting this month's figures. I can't see where the 2021 figures are on the GCI website.

These leaders just like love to praise themselves over nothing.

Truth they had no vaccines,  no medical equipment to speak of until all the donations started to come in last year!

The spread of the virus particularly the Delta was from migrants,  then the transportation of infected patients back to their own provinces due to their health care system and not having enough beds they have selective memories! ????

Nothing like a nice pat on the back for the PM. I'm sure he's very self satisfied. Anutin too.

Going to call anything putting Thailand no.1 in anything related to covid complete bull. No country would be voted anywhere near first in any 'real' survey that only testing what 30% of its populace and then refused to open like the rest of the planet. Utter drivel

if they only knew the "real" truth

Shameless less-than-true propaganda regimes like North Korea would use to buoy nationalism to populations that'd helplessly buy into whatever is being fed to them.

How can Universal Healthcare be praised????? Remember Thaksin introduced it, so it must have been a terrible and corrupt idea>>>>

Remember if one was to dispute this they may face charges in this military run 'democracy'. No free speech here just propoganda.

Seems to me "Universal" would include all residents. Costa Rica is one example of a nation with a universal approach. Costs about 10% of your declared expat retirement income.

For my marriage visa here I show 51 000 baht being transferred In from Social Security. I would not at all mind paying 5,000 baht each month for 100% medical cover.

You and me both, that is a mere 60,000 baht  p.a.  and I have just been quoted a little more than that for a somewhat limited and exclusion ridden, you pay up-front cover!
