How Do I Tell If Ports Are Open?

I'm trying a little something here and its not working. I am told that for it to work, the following ports MUST NOT be blocked by my ISP:

All the ports are UDP.

5060-5063 SIP

FTP 69

RTP 10,000 to 20,000

I called Tspeed and they said they don't block any ports. But who knows if they even understood me. So I sent a clear e-mail and am still waiting for a response.

Is there any way I can check this myself?

Also, I am told that I have to configure my ADSL router (http://www.xavi.com.tw/Products/ADSL-8124r.htm) to bridge mode. I went into the router's page and went to the bridge tab. I enabled all the boxes. Didn't work. I enabled some and not others. Didn't work. Does anyone know what they mean exactly by configuring my ADSL router to bridge mode? If so, how do I do it? By the way, this router is from TT&T (1000 baht with TSpeed sign up).

If anyone can help me out here, it would be much appreciated.

using windows to check active ports

start : run : cmd : netstat -a

If you set a modem to a bridge function i.e. a modem only device no router functions or firewall options will be available on the modem. This means that your modem will just be a modem without any Login options to your ISP hence you would require a second device or PC to do the login to your ISP.

Okay, I did that while connected to the internet via my regular router. No UDP ports correspond exactly to the numbers of the ports I need to make sure are open. There's mostly a lot of three thousand and something numbers. All of these ports have *:* to the right of them. THE TCP addresses all have

(my name): LISTENING

next to them, but UDP only *:* whatever that is.

Are we closer to knowing if the stated ports are closed or open?

As far as setting the router to bridge mode, I think I did it and it makes no difference to my Internet, which is good, but it doesn't solve my problem either.

Let me give you a little more information. I signed up with Vonage (www.vonage.com). It should work like this. ADSL line comes into regular router. Router goes to WAN port on Motorolla device. PC port on Motorolla device is connected to my computer. Then the Motorolla device should communicate with home base in the US. I plug my phone into the device, pick it up and I have a US dial tone. Great, if it worked. I know two people in Thailand who use this no problem. They use TRUE and Samart. When I asked TT&T if they blocked ports, they said they would look into it and also said that they don't think it will work because 'CAT supplies TT&T with private IP address'. Any idea what this means? Does it mean I have a static IP address by any chance?

I've been on the phone with Vonage for about 3 hours and I've talked to 5 different people. I'ver also tried another router. But nothing works.

I have to think the problem lies with TT&T. Does anyone have any ideas? If you're in Chiang Mai and you think you can figure this out, I'll pay 1500 baht to anyone who can do just that if I haven't done so myself by the end of next week.

Sorry if i can't answer your question but you made me very curious about the motorola device. Sounds like you have 2 devices 1 here and 1 at the US connected to a telephoneline. Is that right?

I know how to test for tcp ports but UDP i have no experience with.

Maybe Bob... The way things are going, I may never know. I can't reply on clear and quick repsponses from TT&T unfortunately...

Khun Jean- there's only one device wherever you want to use the phone. You pay a monthly fee to a US company. For 99% of people, they plug their modem into the device and the device into a phone. The device goes online. and the phone has a US dial tone. People call your US number, your Thai phone rings. vonage.com

I know people with TRUE and Samart using it no problem. Why TT&T should be different I don't know. But I'm on the verge of paying anyone who can figure it out. But if the problem is with TT&T, I guess there's nothing that can be done.

I still don't get what they say 'I don't think it will work because CAT provide TT&T with private IP address'. Someone has to know what this means and where this leaves me???

Believe it means you are not directly connected to the internet but part of a local network and have address IP assigned by that network. But too lazy to really check it out. :o

Does anyone have anything else to offer? What about the weird symbols next to the UDP ports? What do they mean? Of course I still haven't heard anything from TT&T about whether the needed ports are blocked. They just shifted the responsibility to CAT. I hate to say it, but this is very typical of my overall experience with most Thais. 'Its not us. Its them.' No one is willing to stand up and take charge of the situation and simply resolve the customer's problem in whatever way needed. Instead, they tell you it all has to do with a different company, implying that they need not worry about it...
