Thailand handbag tax??

Featured Replies

Hi Legends,

We lived in Thailand for 5 years but moved back to Australia in 2015.
Used to visit LOS every year or so until COVID.

Planning on a big family holiday at Christmas  as it’s been 4.5 years since we’ve been back.

The missus is saying there is a new arrival tax on handbags??????

She (like all Thais I know loves Louis Vuitton etc) and I don’t want to get stung on arrival this time!

Well we’re off to a good start then!!!

Any real advice or information is appreciated.

There was one recent news story where someone was charged but only on the items that customs said didn't look used.

If they are real LV bags you just have to pay the tax, if FAKE they get confiscated.....to be sold on at a later date!   555

New, unused expensive items can be subject to import tax.

Yes they will tax-- but there are some tricks. She carry one as personal. You bring in checkin, cheap suitcase. Put the handbags in boxes of cheaper brands. Carry out suitcases separately ( separate from your wife with the handbag) I have hear they don't care about handbags costing less than 200,000 baht.

Thanks all.

So hopefully it is only on brand new unused bags that get taxed.

Thought it was strange that they were now taxing expensive items on arrival.

Not really a good idea to be taxing tourists and returning Thais for wearing expensive clothes and accessories!

Cheers

James

You/she will only be here for a short period/holiday, best to leave the bag at home (no pun intended).
