Football - Australia became the 31st team to book their place at the 2022 World Cup after beating Peru 5-4 on penalties after the game had ended 0-0.  This will be Australia's fifth World Cup in a row and they will be in Group D alongside holders France, Denmark and Tunisia. 

 

France's hopes of retaining the Nations League title are over after a 1-0 home defeat by Croatia which means they cannot reach next year's finals. In other games played last night Denmark beat Austria 2-0 and there were also wins for Kazakhstan  and Azerbaijan. Iceland and Israel drew 2-2.

 

Cricket - England have the chance to force victory in the second Test after taking late New Zealand wickets on the fourth day at Trent Bridge Nottingham UK. The hosts picked up 3-37 in the closing stages to leave New Zealand 224-7, 238 ahead.

 

Tennis -  Russia's Daniil Medvedev has replaced Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings, two weeks before a Wimbledon at which he will not be allowed to play.  Djokovic has dropped to world number three, with the injured Alexander Zverev rising to second.
