Israel-based Elbit Systems has won an international bid to supply the Royal Thai Navy with seven Hermes 900 Kochav drones (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) at a cost of about four billion baht, RTN Spokesman Vice Adm Pokkrong Monthatphalin said today (Friday).

He said that Defence Permanent Secretary General Warakiat Rattananont signed an approval for the winning bid yesterday and that a formal contract for the acquisition of the drones is expected to be signed within 30 days, between the RTN and Elbit Systems’ representative in Thailand.

The procurement has been approved by the Comptroller Department and an official public announcement will be issued after the formal signing of the contract.

To use against WHO ? Thailand has NO ENEMIES. So Needs No Military at all in fact . Let alone useless military spending when eight million Thais in desperate Poverty with rubbish primary Education. ??

  • Weaponry purchased has nothing to do with enemies real or perceived in Thailand Weapons in Thailand have one purpose only & that is to generate receipts far in excess of actual weaponry

The aircraft carrier might actually end up with some aircraft (of sorts) at last.

Will they have any ground stations to control them.  Nothing is said about them.

That is about 16 MILLION dollars per vehicle! While I am aware that these are not "toy drones" that one can order on Lazada, I somehow still have a hunch that 3 quarters of that amount is for "assorted commissions".

Has no-one bothered asking the Ukrainians where they get THEIR drones? They seem to be doing a great job -- yet I very much doubt they cost 16 million bucks a-piece.

Is this instead of the Subs ,,, or are they doing well and getting both , Elbit Systems’ representative in Thailand. I thought there would have to be a middle man in Thailand to facilitate this deal.......

It does seem a high price-- there are different types of drones, these are not the ones that fly down explode & take out a tank.

Giving them to the navy, not the Army--would suggest long range drones.

This is the same company that supplied Sri Lanka government a few years back-- they had been fighting the Tamil Tigers, since 1976,

with the drones they were wiped out in 8 months, in what some were calling the Tamil genocide.

It also only costs about $2 million per unit excluding the control vehicles. It is also in service and very effective with a number of countries. It is a newer design than the Israeli version and well proven in combat.

The Israeli model costs around 570.xxx.xxx each and come complete with control systems

It also depends on the weapon load.

A weapon that will take out a tank or a bunker would be useless on troops in an open area.

No. Thais will be supplying those....

Maybe for surveillance of those BKK demonstrations.

I'm glad taxpayers' money is well spent, they'll feel better knowing that 7 drones are flying in the Thai sky for such a modest amount...

I'm ok for countries investing into developing their military equipment, but this really has become a farce.

No as they already have a surplus left over from the ones they had planned for the new attack helicopters

They will just reorient them from vertical thrust to horizontal ????

Does it really matter, the procurers are happy, that's what matters!

I use my drone to. Make sure my little thai is hurrying back from a beer run at the supermarket 200 feet over Manchester

Just done a few orbits of asda!

As long as you don't have to wait many years to get them, and you can upgrade them ,than good choice. I know the Chinese ones are much cheaper but they are only copies

The US bidder failed the screening test.

Be very interesting to see who was on that committee ! Considering lowly Turkey got on the final 4 !

I hope they have under water capabilities, if used on there Aircraft carrier.

Also could be a problem with the supply of of engines.

Maybe Briggs & Stratton can help.  :giggle:

How many noughts in a billion?

Great to hear that the deal is closed. That’s THB 4 Billion well spent!

The need of military drones has never been higher and things like education and health for the general public can of course wait. The current waiting-list for an MRI-scan in Chiang Mai is e.g. only 9 months on government healthcare. And we all know how great public education is.

You surely can’t blame the leaders for not loving their country and it’s people. Hope they enjoy their new mansions and super cars.

What a F-upped world we live in!!!

In other news, Admiral Somchai Ratapadasaka$hit has ordered his procuring officers to attend English school, as the aforementioned officers giddily thought they were ordering a weapon that would infect the enemy with a sexual disease....
