Better progress: Sokhonn’s second visit to Myanmar yields more results

The second visit by the Asean Special Envoy to war-torn Myanmar has proved to be relatively successful, with his focus on bringing humanitarian aid to the suffering people and meeting with some groups involved in the conflict. However, once again he failed to gain access to meet jailed former civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi whose government was ousted in a military coup.

 

The five-day visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn, in his capacity as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair, was wrapped up on Saturday during which he met representatives of seven ethnic armed groups in Myanmar in a bid to resolve the crisis in the country controlled by the junta’s State Administrative Council (SAC).

 

Several key issues, including the developments in the political and humanitarian situations on the ground and in each state and region where the groups are active, were extensively discussed by all sides, a Foreign Ministry’s statement on Saturday said.
