Well, the inhabitants of New Zealand at the time were Maoris, who vanquished the then in habitants, the Morioris, who fled to the Chatam Islands........ those not eaten.

Maori name is, Aotearoa, the Land of the Long White Cloud.

As for America, tis called after the first european to find it, Amerigo Vespucci.
