Gov’t to clean up street food

According to the World Health Organization eating contaminated, spoiled, or toxic food can be a root cause of about 200 diseases and because “the majority of street foods are extremely unhealthy” are causes for the government’s relentless effort to ensure cleanliness in street food services nationwide. The government aims to remove the blight of food poisoning from street food by 2030.

 

The recent enactment of the Kingdom’s Food Safety Law is seen as a much-needed measure in the right direction, but knowing that relying on the law alone will not stamp out unhygienic street food, the government is now stepping up awareness among food vendors on the need to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks and improve human health.

 

Sok Silo, Secretary-General of Council for Agricultural and Rural Development, said enforcement will also be taken to compel vendors to clean up their act. “The majority of street food is extremely unhealthy and dangerously impair people’s health. Food poisoning can lead to hundreds of diseases, which is why authorities are most concerned about unsafe food.” “The World Health Organization has found that food poisoning can lead to about 200 diseases.
